I would go with a NAPA gold filter and since you live where it gets cold, 10w-30 synthetic oil.

I run Rotella 15-40 in the summer and 5-40 in the winter. Mopar filters from Walmart, changed every 3000.

Lube the balljoints and tie rod ends every oil change too.

Last year we got down to 16 degrees which is unusual but we regularly get down in the 30's and it's not uncommon to drop into the 20's especially areas around washes. Also there's so many mountains around. Last year I went up by Point of pines which is about 160 miles north on the Indian reservation at an elevation of 7000. we went right after Christmas and it was well below 0 with wind and probably single digits overnight. we got snowed in for two extra days. here's a youtube of the drive out in my previous truck which is a 1992 Nissan

Anyway for my 2004 GC which I just did the first oil change I used Mobil1 High Milage with a Purolater pure1 filter. In the Nissan I've used both Royal Purple and Redline (before that dino oil)

Wix , Purolater, K & N , Mobil all make great filters. Fram is junk.

I run the cheapest oil I can find in my 5.2L ZJ. It has worked for the past 185,000 miles, why try to fix a good thing? I usually do Napa Gold for the filters, but I've run STP without any problems.

I've done the same on my 2007 Ram 1500 5.7L and I just hit 70k without any problems.

I just try to change my oil every 3000-4000 miles and never ran into a problem. Never ventured into the world of synthetics. Never felt a need to. :shrug:

iv heard fram are crappy filters also, so i always substitute a basic stp filter instead at the autozone, when i buy whatever oil they have in the 5+ quart jug on special that comes with the filter.
iv googled it in past and you can find writeups from guys who have cut them all open and shown the insides, and shown why fram is bad.
i just change the oil when it looks black on the dipstick and have never had any problem, probably around 5000 miles on the dd, once a year on the wheeler.

I have Fram on my Cherokee (my GC has a no name brand). No problems with them but I'll be switching to K&N mainly because they have the nut on the filter and it will make changing easier.

you know you can set the VIC to 3k or 6k.

You cannot use a WORSE filter than FRAM. (Even in a Mustang )

They are cardboard junk.

Anything else is better.

Purolator is good, mopar is fine.

First, this is not a post to get people all angry and revved up, just an obversation I have noticed on this thread.
Its amazing how many people hate Fram filters here. I've used them my whole driving life which is over 17 years, in all sorts of vehicles and I never had a single issue with them. Im sure there are others out there who have had the same experience as me. Let me also say I really dont care what filter anybody uses, but its just makes me wonder how a company like Fram, who are manufactured by Allied Signal, who are huge!!!, can make filters for thousands of applications, but the few they make for Jeeps, suck.? Interesting. Im sure people have had issues with them, but also pretty certain people have also had issues with other filter brands. Maybe, the problems are more common with Fram because theres a higher percentage of people using/used them. Just a thought...

Hey guys,

Newb here, just bought a Jeep a few weeks ago and want to get your insight on the best oil you guys use for your Grand Cherokee's. I use the best that money can buy for my bike, Rotella T6, but I doubt I'll be putting it in the Jeep. I also just stuck with Quaker State and Fram on my Mustang and it ran just fine. Seeing as the Mustang was a Ford, I didn't care what went into it. Wondering if I should stick with Mopar oil and filters, or if I should/can/shouldn't try using other oils, synthetic or not. Mobile 1? Purolator filters? Fram filters? What oil and filter do you use and why?

What interval do you change the oil? Stick with 6000 miles as Mopar recommends or go shorter/longer based on which oil you use?

Edit: I found an oil that I've never seen before, basically because I've always trusted the oils I've used thus far. But with a new vehicle, I'd like to see what everyone recommends. I found Mobil 1 extended performance and noticed you can go up to 15,000 miles without a change. Anyone praise or put this oil down?

Another Edit: Going along with oil changes, I know some vehicles can have the chassis lubricated if you pay for an oil change. Are there any lube points to pay attention to on the GC's? Any type of lube work? Are there fittings or just squirt it out?

Hey I use Prad Benn 20w-50 "Green Oil" It's partial synthetic oil, literally green, and it's used in performance vehicles and I'm not too easy on my rig sometimes Plus, the oil's good for 4-5 thousand miles rather than 3. I use Casite 107 filter because it's always been good to me and it doesn't void any dealer warranties. (not sure if you need to worry about that)

When Allied Signal (Honeywell) bought Fram, they totally changed the way the filters were made... to keep the price the same but drastically reduce the cost of materials and manufacturing.

Fram had been, for decades, the benchmark of highest quality filters; that changed in less than a year.

Do a search... for instance, the filter area in a Fram auto filter is in the neighborhood of HALF the area of, say a Purolator. They have a cardboard cap and filter.

Those are facts.

...and to drvajeep, it's not just the filters they make for Jeeps... that doesn't make sense. It's all of them.

I would never use a Fram. I used to Always use Fram and nothing else.

Its too bad, but not uncommon that a huge corporation cuts back quality to save money and probably give themselves bigger bonuses. That sucks! o well. I found this link while sadly finding out that my Fram filters do indeed fall short of being what they once were. Looks like i'll be changing filters.

I use mobil synthetic high mileage for cenvenience. I've used Amsoil with my diesel before. Purolator or wix filters. I think the extended mileage oil is a misnomer. You should still be doing a regular filter change and then topping off the extra quart from the filter. Diesel's that run extended usually run a dual filter set up and still change them at 3-5000miles. Plus they run regular analysis checks to monitor their oil. Besides that, a gasoline engine still gets emissions by products building up in the oil that diesel's don't see.

You are exactly right, even though we have vastly more efficient and cleaner fuel delivery systems (MPI's) that are not poluting the oil with sut and carbon, most filtering systems are only useful for about 1/2 the life of most modern oils. I change my oil every 6k, and i change my filter every 3k, and my DD is a 1999 silverado 2500 HD with 313,000 miles on it and still running strong.
