Hey guys,

Newb here, just bought a Jeep a few weeks ago and want to get your insight on the best oil you guys use for your Grand Cherokee's. I use the best that money can buy for my bike, Rotella T6, but I doubt I'll be putting it in the Jeep. I also just stuck with Quaker State and Fram on my Mustang and it ran just fine. Seeing as the Mustang was a Ford, I didn't care what went into it. Wondering if I should stick with Mopar oil and filters, or if I should/can/shouldn't try using other oils, synthetic or not. Mobile 1? Purolator filters? Fram filters? What oil and filter do you use and why?

What interval do you change the oil? Stick with 6000 miles as Mopar recommends or go shorter/longer based on which oil you use?

Edit: I found an oil that I've never seen before, basically because I've always trusted the oils I've used thus far. But with a new vehicle, I'd like to see what everyone recommends. I found Mobil 1 extended performance and noticed you can go up to 15,000 miles without a change. Anyone praise or put this oil down?

Another Edit: Going along with oil changes, I know some vehicles can have the chassis lubricated if you pay for an oil change. Are there any lube points to pay attention to on the GC's? Any type of lube work? Are there fittings or just squirt it out?

i use castrol gtx high mileage and k&n oil filter. always have and havent had a problem. ive never heard of that mobil 1 oil though must be new

It looks like the Mobil 1 EP has been around for a few years. I had never heard of it before today. Kind of expensive, but a lot of people elsewhere are saying they change their oil around 10-12000 just to be safe.

then why does the vic only set to 3000 miles..... i put around 100 miles a day and use castrol high mileage with k&n filter and 2 changes a month to once a month idk who told u 6-12k miles but oil does not last to 10k miles specially if u want full protection from the oil

The vic question is hilarious to me because mine is also set to 3000 miles, but the MANUAL that comes WITH the vehicle states every 6000 miles. Confused??? I ALWAYS try to follow the manual, and when it says 6000, it's 6000 for me unless an oil can extend that, which I've found to be the Mobil 1 EP. Doesn't mean I won't change the filter every 6000.

mopar reccomends mobil 1 full synthetic

you know you can set the VIC to 3k or 6k.

I run Mobil 1 synthetic. I am pretty hard on the WJ, so I change the oil every 5k. I use the mopar filters, I always ask the dealership to give me a better price, which ends up at about $5.

I think the more important Q would be what model grand cherokee do you have (ZJ, WJ, WK), and what motor in said Jeep?

I have the 4.7L in my '99 and I've always used Castrol High Mileage (synthetic blend) 10W30 and Fram High Mileage filters. I try and change the oil as close to 5K miles as I can. I have over 130K on my engine and it still runs quiet. In the past few years I have been adding Lucas Oil to my engine oil as well. I love that stuff.

I use mobil synthetic high mileage for cenvenience. I've used Amsoil with my diesel before. Purolator or wix filters. I think the extended mileage oil is a misnomer. You should still be doing a regular filter change and then topping off the extra quart from the filter. Diesel's that run extended usually run a dual filter set up and still change them at 3-5000miles. Plus they run regular analysis checks to monitor their oil. Besides that, a gasoline engine still gets emissions by products building up in the oil that diesel's don't see.

In my 4.0L 190k I run Rotella 15w40 w/ a Napa Gold filter and change at 4K in the summer time. Winter I use Castrol GTX 10w30 and change at 3-4K
Winter in Tucson, what does it go down to? Like 50. Lol.

I run Rotella 15-40 in the summer and 5-40 in the winter. Mopar filters from Walmart, changed every 3000.

Lube the balljoints and tie rod ends every oil change too.

I use Castrol regular oil. I recently sold the ZJ 5.2 with 220000 miles on it. The engine ran like new. I changed it around 4000 miles. Whatever you do, don't use Fram filters. I have 2 filters fail, and cause the pressure to drop. Both times, a new filter fixed the problem. Of course, I changed the oil pressure switch first with no change. After the second time it happened, I will never go back.

Surely you know that the VIC is adjustable.

I'm presently driving a 4.0 '98ZJ, and this goes back to my cherokee, but AFAIK applies to both, FRAM filters should never be used on the 4.0. They`re really a crappy filter and have been known to cause lots of problems with the oil pressure dropping or being too low. Napa gold filters as previously pointed out are a very good filter and not too expensive. Even the silver aren`t bad at all. I`ll never use FRAM again, as I`ve seen first hand they tend to cause a lower pressure.
Now I had a new engine put in last summer as something sounded awful in the top end and rather than trying to track down the noise and fixing, got a 140k engine put in. [now at 177k, 377k on the truck] Now doing some quick research at the wreckers, although the engine is out of a '98 it actually has a WJ block on it. Must say though I do like the oil filter setup a lot better on it. Anyways, Tried going synthetic on it and so far am not having any oil leaking issues from it, which can happen on older vehicles with the seals, but figured that with the lower mileage try it. Oil is changed every 7500km. Supposedly go 10,000km but not going to push it. Where I'm having oil changed they can't belive how clean my oil is when I do change it. That being said, I also throw in a bottle or Risolen in with at the recommendation of my mechanic. [very honest guy and been going to him for years] Explained that what this does is keeps the engine very clean, and from building up sludge as well as any it may have it will slowly break down and get rid of it. He's used it in all of his vehicles for years. He's never steered me wrong yet, and so far I've not had any problems.
As for weight of oil, the 4.0l us usually best to run 10w40, but I know this also can depend on where one lives, aka warmer places. I use it all year winter and summer. Did on my old cherokee as well, and is what I put in my '89 5spd cherokee although I'm restoring it and it's not on the road as of yet.
