yea i got mine off ebay for 70 or 80..i just bought one of the same basic kits for my 5.9..hope to install it next week when i do my lift..ill try and get pics and do a write up on it

I got mine through Summit Racings ebay store. Install was a breeze thanks to these instructions. Also installed a new solenoid pack. Shifts great now. I do notice however that sometimes if letting off just before the 2-3 shift it will slam into 3rd pretty good. Might be a TPS issue.

I've noticed that too, but I think it's just because the tranny is ready to shift into 3rd when the power behind it disappears and gets thrown into 3rd too quickly for the amount of power its getting. Seems to happen more to me when the tranny is cold. It is possible it could be a TPS issue though. Let me know if you find out anything!

So it's been a week now on the new Mopar TPS and I'm still getting the hard 2-3 shift. Generally only when cold. The shift firmness seems sporadic at best. There are days were it shifts as if stock under normal to moderate throttle and then there are days when it shifts 2-3 pretty hard under same throttle application. Im wondering has anybody ran the shift kit with the resistor removed(and without the SCT programming)? Any issues with the resistor out of the loop? Obviously there won't be the increased line pressure, but I'm not liking how hard it hits from 2-3 at times.

Or is the hard 2-3 shift something that goes away as the tcm relearns shift patterns and line pressure? I've read that some have said they got pretty harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts for the first couple weeks that were inconsistent. All the symptoms mine's exhibiting.. very incosistent as far as when the harsh 2-3 shift would occur.

I don't think running with the resistor is a problem. However, I would recommend removing it if you have the SCT programming. The combination of the resistor and SCT may be too much and causing your 2-3 harsh shift. Try just the SCT and see how it feels

No SCT tuner on mine. I've noticed it only does it if I jump on it a bit when cold, then relearns shift patterns. When I say cold I mean after its been idling for 15 mins. I've also come to the conclusion that it still is relearning line pressure as I've reset the pcm a couple different times now(TPS & fuel pump). Time will tell I suppose.

After reading all the little problems people are having with this kit it makes me a little concerned about getting it. Like everyone else I will be changing my tranny filter and gasket. That magnet looked pretty sweet so I am gonna pick one up. But the shift kit seems a little problematic. Are any of the problems subsiding at all? Also was there a solution to the hard and sporadic shifts?

Thanks

Thanks a lot for this Jeepboy.

I have just done a drain and filter change and was wanting to replace the actuator plate with a stock one from the agents, but I could not release the wiring clip on the top of the VB, so had a look at the plate and it looked fine, tightened up a few of the 6 bolts holding it in place and then put it all back again.

My 2nd to 3rd shift, when cold, is still there though, and that does not matter how I am accelerating (although I never accelerate hard when cold) but after its been going a bit shes smooth as gravy again.

Any ideas or should go the whole hog and redo the box with and the valves, or just replace the VB?

Much appreciated.

will be following this with much interest, as I have a similar issue
have spoken to a few auto gearbox specialist, and gotten different diagnostic ideas.
the one says, just a good service, oil and filters should solve it, and the other says solonoid pack, my wj is stock, as sad as that sounds
can't find not paternal to the harsh 2nd to 3rd change

Jeepboy, great opening post, it will be of help soon:D

I seem to found the solution to my problem it seems.

I was told when I bought the Jeep not to use OD in and around town, so I would always press the OD button upon startup.

However, I have been experimenting with that and now I do not touch it, and my severe jerk is a thing of the past. It does still SOMETIMES have a harsh change into third, but not a hard jerky change, cold or warm.

Any ideas why this would be the case?

I bought a transgo kit for mine after reading this writeup earlier in the spring. It was a great writeup. I am glad I decided to do it, because I found something very ugly inside the valve body that was replaced with the transgo kit:

I have 2 questions for those of you who've done the HD2 kit..

  1. It says on Transgo's website that "complete" installation necessitates dropping the whole transmission, but partial installation can be done from the bottom. What part(s) require dropping the trans, and what do they do? (or, what are the compromises of doing a partial install)
  2. My biggest complaint about this transmission is the delay in response when I need a fast kickdown, such as switching from a standstill lane to a fast moving lane in dense traffic... does this kit address that at all?

Thank you!

1.There are some additional springs that are replaced, I think they increase the line pressure. I, and about 5 others that I know have done this, just did the parts in the bottom. They are the most important anyways.
BTW- I was texting a local jeeper last weekend that was installing this kit. MAKE SURE you get the old trans filter seal out, and make sure the new one seats well when you re-install the new trans filter.

2. It helps, it shifts faster. I notice it in daily driving, but even more so when towing. I also have the superchips tuner, so the combination of the two is perfect.

does this kit do anything for downshift out of overdrive? mine is shifting rough into and shruddering out of overdrive. shifts nice and smooth through the lower gears though.
not sure if my tranny is just starting to go, or maybe something i can correct, like the problem 85iroc shown there.

I would contact Transgo and ask them, but I doubt it. Going into and out of overdrive is electronically controlled I believe. One thing you should check though is to see if your transmission was ever flashed/upgraded by the dealer. Mine received the software update in 2001. I you need to change the fluid and filters though, I would recommend this kit. It decreases shift time so that it doesn't feel as much like a sedan transmission.

Greetings all!
I've been absent for a while and decided it was time to come back to the forum and check up on things!

I'm very glad to see that many of you found this write-up helpful and I appreciate all the compliments!

If anybody has any questions that still need to be addressed feel free to post or send me a PM and I'd be happy to help.
