This would be the same for a 249 to 231??
NO! The cases are shaped differently.

Hey, does anyone know if a 242 out of a 00 xj would work, just swaping the shafts?
It should after swapping the input's. The Tailhousing is different so you'll probably need to pull the driveshaft out of that XJ too.

ok, i just swaqpped and 242 from a 97 I6 Grand Cherokee into my 97 V8 Grand. I have a few problems. It seems my rear drive shaft is too long. I cant get it shortened until monday but i havent read anywhere on this thread where anyone else ran into this problem. second do i have to swap the speedo gear? i cant get it to plug into the 242 speedo. And last, my linkage wont let me shift the 242 out of 2wd, what did you guys do for the linkage?

That awfull top bolt went out easily after lowering the full trans.
I just put a bottle Jack under the the tranny oil pan, and lowered the whole until i could place the whrench.

Re-fitting was a nightmare. Had to move the cat ...

i did mine with much success a long time ago but i have always wanted to get the VIC to play along with the TC... i have read many times that there are 2 plugs a red and maybe blue plug sitting behind the VIC and which ever one is plugged in you just switch it. well i looked and dug around for quite a while and found nothing. is that extra plug only on some models or is there a way to run my own wires somewhere?

i took the VIC apart to fix the coolent sensor bad problem and saw it has all the lights in there for 4 part time 4 full time and lo there are no lights well at least no words that come on for 2 or neutral. i was just hoping there was a way to make it work

thanks

LESSIONS LEARNED All Bolts on the Transfer cases themselves are metric usually 15 or 14 mm EXCEPT the 6 connecting bolts which are 9/16.

When tearing apart the NP242.. it is not nessasary to remove the pin with the easy out. Just take a 14mm wrench on the shift linkage and rotate past 4X4 LOW detent.. basically as far as it will go and the forks will drop right out. Hold the linkage down again when you reinsert the forks.

During reassembly use rubbing alcohol on all RTV mating surfaces to remove all oils and transmission fluid before applying RTV. Then it is best to wait a few hours or more to let the RTV cure before filling with transmission fluid.

Now that I have pulled 3 total transfer cases and installed 2... I now know it is not nessasary to completly drop the cross member.. just loosen the two bolts on one side slightly and almost remove the two bolt on the other side. (Just left approx 2 threads holding it) That will give you the clearance you need (Short 9/16 wrench is a big help!!).

While rigging your linkage I found the best way to do it is.. shift into 2WD then loosen the trunnion bolt and pull every bit of slack out of the linkage toward 2WD (It may help you to use a 14mm wrench on the shift tab on the transfer case to pull out the rest of the slack).

The VIC was simple as others say.. pull the 6 screws on the facia.. pull 3 more on the VIC. Unplug the Red two wire plug. Connect the Black one wire plug. ENJOY [smilie=bal_cool.gif]

Last but not least... SAFETY FIRST!!! USE JACK STANDS!!! or a Lift.
CHOCK YOUR WHEELS!! CHOCK YOUR WHEELS!! CHOCK YOUR WHEELS!! Especially when lowering your Jeep back to the ground.. lest you get a nice scare or worse when the jack slips when the jeep starts to roll!! [smilie=bal_oops.gif] (THANK THE LORD FOR HAVING JACKSTANDS AS A BACKUP!!) Learn from others mistakes so you can live to drive another day!!

do i need to change the rear driveshaft?

do i need to change the rear driveshaft?
I just got the 231 and im getting ready to do the swap but i have read on some forums that sometimes the rear driveshaft ends up really fit. Is this true or will it work fine?

thanks
Note: Great writeup, those images helped me out a lot.

I did not have to change my drive shaft.. Take a tape measure and measure both transfer cases... if they are identical...you are good.. if the 231 is slightly shorter...still not a prob..
If the 231 is more than probably an inch longer than your 249 or 2 inches shorter then yes you will need to hunt out another shaft.

wierd, on my 97 5.2, i couldnt find the plug ANYWHERE aswell.....

I really wish I'd read this before I pulled the 242 out, I spent hours on my back trying to figure out why my 14mm wouldn't fit on every bolt. After I found out they were 9/16th it made a lot more sense and came out right away.

might have to change the front driveshaft!

well guys, i did the swap and looks like i will have to change the front driveshaft. But i do not want to use this thread for my self so i created a new one.

This is more or less where I'm at. My 242 came from a 1990 XJ, do I have to buy a new speedo sensor from jeep or can I jam the 249 sensor in there?

Does anyone know what issues I would run into if I tried to put a NP242 from a 1999 Cherokee into a into a 1993 Grand Cherokee. I've read all of the previous posts and I understand the input shaft will need to be swapped, but I also see that the output housing to the front axle is different on the newer model. I don't know what problems would arise from this. Any other advice would be helpful. Thanks.

prob way to much..honestly the swap is not a very hard thing..loosen a few bolts pull the old one out put the new one back in tighten up bolts..the hard part is making sure you have a direct swap..i did my swap the other day on my WJ took me about 2 hours
