I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee with the V8. It seems like I'm only getting 3 forward gears when I'm in 4-low. How fast should I be able to go? (Obviously I'm only doing this in the sand dunes and not on the street.)

I know that 25 mph is recommended but I also know that the majority of us go faster than that, especially in the sand. Perhaps a better way to phrase my question is "How many forward gears should I have in 4-low"? I start in 1, manually shift to 2, then manually shift to "D" where it only shifts once (I'm assuming into 3rd) and then doesn't shift again. I'm thinking it should shift one more time.

Well, I'd say if your top speed in 4-hi is 100 mph, then 4-lo would work out to be just under 37 mph. All I did was divide 100 by 2.72, which is your T-case ratio.

I'm not sure if the trans will go into OD in 4-lo, that might be why you're not feeling the fourth shift.

I've hit the rev limiter in "drive" more than a few times in 4LO in snow, mud, and various hill climbs. Never bothered to look at the speedometer, though. You wheel on the east coast long enough, you start to realize that "going slow" isn't always an option.

I didnt know that it was possible to put it in 'D' while in 4lo. I tried a few times with my 249 T-case and each time, as soon as it went into 'D', the T-case will kick out of 4lo and into neutral. I just put it in 4lo and shift down to 2 and crawl. I maxxed it out at about 15 mph. Any faster and it revved pretty high. A waste of gas if you go any faster. I generally keep the RPMs at around 2000-2500 while in 4lo, which is around 15mph in 2nd gear.

If it's kicking out of 4-low when you shift into drive then there's a problem -- most likely you're not really shifted all the way into 4-low so it's popping out.

I think this was mentioned before, but I don't think OD is enabled in 4-LO. So that would explain the 3 forward gears. IIRC, my 93 is the same way.

A number of folks seem to be missing this point...

Next time you guys that only using 4LO to "crawl", look at the speedometer next time you are flooring it through mud or a slippery hill climb...

x2 for MN mud and snow! Gotta keep them tires turning or your screwed!

Thanks for all the good info! I like using 4-low because of the extra power. 4-high is a little under powered for the sand. I guess it's time for gears -- HA!

In 4-Lo my ZJ hits Rev limiter at 55mph..... I've used my ZJ for years in the desert 4lo 45-50 mph doing hill climbs and such.. never had an issue with it.... although I only use it for the sticky stuff... i have beat others in WJ's and ZJ's with their 4-LO on 100 yards... when i was in 2 wheel drive mode.... off the line and in the long run too.... "i have a 231j swapped into my ZJ"

A friend Greanaded his 231 in a TJ coasting down a long steep hill in 4 low with the clutch in. They said the RPMs were too high and it blew the gears out the side of the case!

He bought an Atlas after that
