Dear all,
I'm new to ZJ (bought yesterday '93 4.0L) today during overall checking I've discovered that the front diff has no ring inside!!
Due the fact the pinion bearing are bad I think to swap in a D30HP from 89XJ; I would like to keep original ZJ axle shaft (donor has no abs) knuckle rotor etc, basically everything a part diff and axle itself.-
Anyone has already try do this?
My donor axles has 3.55 gear, searching seems also my new ZJ has the same gear, anyone confirm?
THX, Marco

Swapping in an HP Dana 30 is a direct bolt in.

I would keep the XJ shafts because they are u-jointed and are stronger. If your ZJ came from the factory with a tow package then you have 3.73's. If it didn't come from the factory with one then you have 3.55's. Look at the metal tag and see if it's stamped with 3.55 or 3.73's. If you can't tell, take a picture and post it, we'll tell you.

My guess would be you have 3.55's. Swap in the XJ 30, you won't regret it.

thx for the quick answer!
I've the tow package but I don't think it come from factory, tomorrow I remove the dirty&rust to see if I can read the gear ratio.
I know the XJ joint are stronger, but I prefer to keep the ABS due the ZJ is for my wife 4 daily driving, I will add a smal 3-4" lift and no offroad...... for the moment
Do U think the viscostatic coupluer of the 249 was damaged by the driving without front shaft & and missing differential? Maybe a stupid question but is the first time I see this kinda of TC usually I play with 231-242

well I've check the gear ratio and it matching; so now the question is, in order to use shaft, rotor, hub & brake from the ZJ I've to change also the Knuckles?
If yes anyone know if the studs are compatible?

knuckles are completely swappable.

umm...I heard that CV's are stronger...they can handle more ft lbs of torque but dont last as long, is that true? I saw it on Trucks!

personally is the first time that I've a jeep with CV, all my XJ with u-joint, usually I replace every 40-50,000Km for few $ also if them working fine and I never had problems; I don't know the cost and the work to replace a CV
