I discovered this situation a couple of weeks ago during the Palo Duro Jamboree.
During the morning drive from Amarillo to the Canyon the overhead temperature display would update as expected. For example, Friday morning the outside temp showed to be 44 F, which was probably accurate. However, after heading into the canyon for a day of wheelin’ with speeds not much more than 10 – 15 mph the display temp never updated again. Even as the outside temperature got up into the 70s. When the day’s runs were done and I headed back out on the highway, the overhead temp display came back to life. I interesting sidebar to this situation was that the “Auto” climate control system would operate as designed. The system would never turn on the AC compressor even though the inside temp was well over the Setpoint. I had to switch to “Manual” control in order to turn on the AC.
This situation was repeated on Saturday with the display temp stuck on 54 F (morning’s temp).
I spoke to my service advisor and as usual they don’t have a clue. However, they did say they think the overhead temp display does not update unless the vehicle is going 20 – 25 mph, which seems to fit the circumstances. The remaining question is how “Auto” climate control system uses this outside air temp in its control logic. The dealer says there’s no relationship, which if true might indicate the climate control system too doesn’t update until 20 – 25 mph, which goofy as hell.
Anyway, I’ve called Chrysler customer service trying to get insider’s scoop. Anybody had anything like this happen to them?

What you describe happens to me everytime I start on a cool morning-or anytime for that matter. Whatever the temp gauge (upper consul-indicating outside temp) says at the beginning of a trip it stays at that temp until I hit the highway again. I have been told by others that the gauge does not recalculate until the vehicle is going 25 MPH or so.

I don't have auto climate control so can't help you there. I would be interested in hearing what Chrysler says.

Strange AC

Well got the dope from tech support.
The overhead display won't update until vehicle speed excedes 20 - 25 mph.
The "Auto" AC system doesn't work unless the engine rpm is above 1500 or so.
Therefore, no mechanical or electrical problems.
"Knowledge is King" if not confusing.
