My d35 whines at any speed above 50 mph, only under acceleration. I have a lockright that's going in it soon, so I want to get rid of the whine when it's cracked open. I have multiple pairs of shafts, 3 sets of spiders plus 1 complete lockright, and a bunch of spare internals left over from my first d35 (I did the ever-so-popular d35/ d35 swap to match R&P with my d30 when converting to 4wd). What part of the diff usually produces the whine? This d35 has been broken before by Tim(zjatl) before it went under my Jeep, if that is a factor.

It didn't whine when I pulled it, but Its not the spiders, since at highway speeds there would be no motion between them. Most whines are bearings going out, which since its on its original bearings could be a likelihood. Have you pulled the cover yet?

There's your problem...

if it only whines under acceleration it is the pinion bearings. carrier and/or wheel bearings will make noise almost all the time and get worse w/ speed (to some degree).

w/ the parking brake on (or wheels chocked), trans in neutral, see if there is any up/downwards play in the yoke.

I appreciate the quick replies. I'll check those bearings and and also check the pinion bearings and yoke. No, I haven't pulled the cover yet, but I'll do it soon and throw in the lockright despite the whine. Since I've clocked several thousand miles with this whine, how much might that damage the shafts if it's the bearings? I guess I'll see for sure when I open it up.

if its under de-acceleration then its the ring and pinion. I have brand new 4.56 yuoks with timken bearings (not cheapo x-brand stuff) and my front wines like there is no tomorrow. However I do suspect 4WheelParts may have f*ed the install but some and pinion line-ups always wine. my 2 cents

Not that i claim to be any gear expert, b/c i am far from it, but we just did gears on my boss' Zj and we tightened down the pinion nut too far and it whined like a spoiled 5 year old. We brought the jeep in and loosed the nut a smidge and now its good to go. just thought it might help. again i acknowledge that i have no skill whatsoever when it comes to gear set up.

I will def try that.... I don't know jack about the install exept that I read up on how to do it and the only prob I had was not owning a dial indicator so I handed my ZJ to 4wheelparts. They have yet to do a good install on my ZJ so I can bet the fidgeted somewhere in the install.
