My 94 Grand Cherokee won't shift into Overdrive unless I backpedal the transmission, then it won't stay in O/D, drops down . any ideas?

What is 'backpedal the transmission'? Do you mean it shifts into OD if you let off the gas pedal? There are a couple things i'd check..
1 Adjust the kickdown or TV cable
2 Check/adjust the brake pedal switch.
Either one of these can affect how your transmission shifts, especially the TV cable. The brake switch is a multi function switch. It doesn't just turn on the brake lights, it also sends a signal to drop out of OD.
