What is wrong when a car radio in receiver mode gets a staticy/popping background noise that keeps pace with the engine revs? This only happens in receiver mode, not CD.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

EM interference from your Jeeps' electrical system.
Usually caused by an improper (or poorly routed) power connection causing noise from your ignition system to be picked up by the amplifier. Thus the change according to RPMs.

edit: I thought I read you had an AMP.... I guess not... I would search for the CD player's ground and try to sort that out. Also you could tap into the stock harness's ground and attach a second ground for a better connection... it would look pretty gehto but would prob work great.

Do you still get good radio reception? If it does not happen in cd mode, then it is not from your power source ground. 99% of the time you get alternator whine it is from an improper ground loop but it would be present all the time. It sounds like your antenna connection is either loose or there is a short in the line. Mine went bad in my 98 and I just went to sirius instead. Apparently it is a major pain to replace the antenna wire since a fender has to be removed (I think).
