About a year ago I went through some deep water, my Grand barley made it out. The water was almost over the hood and the engine was sputtering and blowing white smoke. The engine has run rough ever since. I am pretty sure know that I am in school learning about engines that I nearly Hydrolocked it.

My question is this: what are some of the things I can check for as far as likely things that I have damaged. I know that when water gets into the cylinder you can not compress a liquid therfore the first think to go is the rods. Is this correct?

I want to start restoring the jeep and make it into an off road vehicle. ie lift kit snorkel ect ect, so I wanted to start un-assing the engine

what year and motor is it? If it has a distributer you most likely have some water in there....
Bingo. I'd bet that this is what it is. Its either hydrolocked or its not. IF it stayed running, its not. Opend up the distributor and dry it out, amybe a squirt for WD40. Do the same for all the plug wires.

As for the first to go in a hydrolock situation, it could be the rods, or the valves or the headgasket, or any combination of those. If you ben a rod, you'd definitely know. This sounds electrical/ignition related. Water and mud = bad news for jeeps.
