Recently my 1996 ZJ V8 has begun making a buzzy growling noise that increasess with engine rpm. Sounds almost but not quite like an empty power steering pump. By listening around, I strongly suspect a failed bearing in the clutch of the AC compressor. It seems like it would be an easy pull/replace operation, but having not ever done one Im not so sure.

Remaned clutches seem to go for $80-$130, and I can get a compressor for not a whole lot more - but then Id have to purge the system and stuff. I found a website detailing the replacement of just the bearing on some older GM style compressor. Seemed reasonable, and the bearing was like $30.

Has anyone done this? Can anyone enlighten me as to the pullers/pliers/special tools required?

Any help appreciated. Oh, and does anyone have the correct belt size to bypass the AC on a 1996 ZJ 5.2l V8? I have checked numberous places, and no one has a listing - but the diagram on the Jeep clearly shows an alternate routing for Non-ac.

Thanks!!

I have a 97, my bearing went out last year. I replaced just the bearing. If I remember right it is held in with a snap ring. I had a hard time finding the right bearing though, I finally got the right one from Lee Auto Parts, ( I went straight to the bearing manufacturer and they couldn't even get it, turns out it was made for them by someone else). Anyways I think the bearing was, I just found the receipt it was $47.23 with tax the part # is FOR 25211. hope that helps. Oh yeah be care full pulling the front off the clutch it bends easily.
