94 grand 5.2 ok long story short.speedometer started jumping around while driving.when it would jump around tranny acted stupid to.so i changed the speed gear deal on the transfer case off my parts rig.that one didnt work at all speedo dead but tranny shifted fine but acted funny about taking overdrive.so went grabed a new one put it in speedo worked tranny done fine life was good again.untill the next day...........speedo quit and the story starts all over again..what the heck and im missing here ? is there something else along the speedo path that im missing????
anybody wanna buy a 94 grand with a lift kit and a twin parts rig stock for like 2500 bucks im really starting to hate these things. HELP please

Did you make sure to turn the speedometer gear to contact output shaft gear in the tranfercase housing? The speedometer gear sits off to one side so you need to place it in there and then rotate it around until it contacts the other gear so they mess together. Did you do this? Because it sounds like it wasn't.

Does it have cruise ? if so the cruise interface unit may be bad, had that happen on a 96 olds cutlass a few years ago. I know I have cruise on my 97ZJ but have not really looked to see if it has one of those head units. On the olds the unit was between the tranny and the dash panel, just a thought.

well im pretty sure its touching i went out and checked again after your reply.it worked fine for a day then just up and quit again.
When you took it out did the gear on the speedometer sensor look burned up at all or melted? Sometimes you can actually mess it in too close and this is just as bad. I had one melt on me before and then gear quit working.

if the tcase is overfilled, the gear will turn intermittently... throwing a code.
I've never heard of that one before. Did this happen to you?

Also wondering how someone would go about overfilling a case without it start dripping out somewhere.

i was on a desolate stretch of highway, somewhere between san diego and boston last spring) and was hearing some ugly noises from the tcase, so i pulled over and looked underneath to find gear oil all over the back of the tcase, and the rear axle. i didn't have the socket to remove the filler plug, but i did have the socket for the speedo gear, so i threw a quart or 3 in there. i get back on the road, and have no speedo. about 30 seconds later, the check engine light comes on.
i drove like that to the next exit where i found an auto parts store, and removed the filler plug and pulled out over a quart of gear oil.
ran the codes, and it was a speed sensor code.
back on the road, speedo was back, no more engine light.

so yah, personal experience.

how i spent my sunday

i checked on the overfill problem .its ok
theres a whole bunch of cussing , wire checking , a cordless drill spinning the end of the sensor and other things involved but heres the short cut of the story
Andy i checked the gear inside the t-case and it seems fine i put grease on the gear on the end of the sensor to see if its contacting the gear in the case, it is.
im actually beginning to think the one out of my parts jeep and the new one i bought are bad.im going tommorrow to get another new one and see if that fixes it.
ill let ya know later

hey andy

the darn thing is doing it again only this time its reading in the high numbers.like 90 and 100 miles an hour.and the usual tranny screw ups that go along with it(really strange the way that computer reads the speedometer ) and its even hitting the speed limiter when i know im only doing like 50. you think theres a reason this things eating these speedo modules? :?: :?:

According to the wiring diagram the splice for the instrument cluster signal is taken right before the signal for the Vehicle Speed Sensor gets to the Vehicle Information Center in the middle of the dash. So I would check to see if you can pull the VIC out and look for any broken wire. The color of the wire should be White with an Orange tracer.
