Out of curiosity I dropped the rear drive shaft and NO CLICKING WHATSOEVER !!!

How the F**K is that possible?

That means NONE of the front drive components are tragically worn or failing! Is that an incorrect assumption?

What is it that is not in the current drive components that WAS causing the clicking ?

ANY input to this conundrum would be appreciated.

What made me decide to drop the rear drive shaft I'll never know!

more info . . .

Prior to dropping the drive shaft whenever the '03 JGC 4.0l 6 was put in drive the forward a click-click sound was generated heard, quite loud.
As speed increased the repetition increased until higher speeds when either the clicking dropped off or was inaudible due to road noise.
I was thinking front axle or steering knuckle. I've replaced the hub bearings both front sides.

I removed the drive shaft to the rear wheels today (running 4wd part time) and NO CLICKING what so ever could be heard, and a smoother (less vibration) ride. The driveshaft has new universal joints front and rear.

Did you figure this out? I have a similar clicking issue that is sometimes audible at low speeds from a stop, increases with speed, then like you said goes away or can't be heard. It sounds like it is located in the front end. I changed the drivers side axle shaft. Replaced trans and front diff fluid - no difference. Did your noise sound like it was coming from the front or was it localized to the rear? I can't quite tell from your post.

Sounds like front left. It's not a steady cyclical click can be erratic in repetition, sometime not all all. I'm thinking the left front axle i installed was for the wrong kind of 4WD, Quadra trac, when i have Select-trac ?

I chased what I call clicking in my 01' for a long time and one day while hand washing mine I found that the center hub caps were loose and they were clicking when I first took off and real bad clicking on rough roads, and I checked out everything under the GC and found no problems. the center hub caps are just held in place with little plastic clips and when they break (after I got 4 new tires is when it started) they click..... not say your clicking is like my clicking just saying what my clicking is. One day I'll find a fix for my clicking but it looks bad without the center caps so just dealing with my clicking for now ! Good luck finding your clicking !

I think the "clicks" i hear are heavier, more pronounced, when i figure it out I'll let you know!

The front driveshaft universal joint (there's only one) was bad. I replaced it and a lot of noise and vibration has ceased.

clicking sound that seems to come up from below the radio thru the dash still exists though. It only starts after obtaining a speed of 35 mph. The noise goes completely silent below 35 mph! it is quite loud . . .

Any suggestions anyone?

Additional info in regards to that 35mph+ "clicking/chattering" noise!

If i go around a right turn curve the chattering stops until I straighten up the wheel back to twelve o'clock. Even a slight turn to 1 o'clock almost eliminates it !!!

1) Have you inspected the CV component of the front driveshaft? On my 01 GC Laredo(4.0), 193k U-joint of the front shaft connected to front diff yoke and the CV joint at rear of shaft connecting to transfer case. I replace U-joint with a greasable Moog and rebuilt the rear CV joint(as it was frozen) with kit from
Re: “clicking”- a few years back(160k) I had front end clicking at 35-45mph and worse when I turned left and would essentially cancel out when braking. It was my right front wheel hub/bearing assy-after replacing-no more clicking. A few weeks later I replaced the left hub as well..
My single universal joint front drive shaft. What do you call that round silver thing at the xfer case side of the driveshaft? View attachment 13846
that is CV joint to the rear of your front shaft. I recently rebuilt mine as it was frozen.
Vortex Garage(ME) has a great video
As does Tyler Potter

while you’re rebuilding, of course replace your front U-joint

I used driveshaftparts.com
But rebuild kits are also available on Amazon and eBay

My universal joint end, of my front drive shaft does NOT look like the one above ! And I did replace the single U-joint with a greasable one.

The clicking noise DEFINITELY is definitely coming from the front. It sounds like it is right below the heater controls in the middle dash console.

Here is another possibility. When i first purchased this Jeep the whole front end was a wreck. I bought a front end steering and hub bearing kit and both front axles.

A couple issues popped on both purchases in which neither "Select-Trac" or "Quadra-Trac" was specified.

Both ended up being for "Quadra-Trac", I have "Select-Trac" . . . some parts didn't fit. They were the control arms and the right front axle, too long. All the other parts fit fine, including left front axle.

So if that that Rt front CV axle joint was not replaced, then indeed it could be bad (clicking source) ? The left front axle felt apart into two pieces as I removed it replacing it with the "Quadra-Trac" axle.

Good indicator for the possibility of the Rt front axle being bad ??

TRQ and most manufacturers specify, in the part description Select-Trac vs Quadra-Drive-for appropriate part selection. Different front differentials are used for each. On my 01 GC Laredo printed on the console shifter plate is “Select-Trac” and my front differential is a Dana 30

Well i didn't (couldn't it was too long) replace the rt side axle, I'll order the correct "Select-trac" `axle and replace it and see what happens.

I had no choice keeping the left side (Quadra-Trac) axle because the original broke in two when removing it, or I would have returned both for the correct "Select-Trac" axles!
