I'm thinking of lifting my ZJ 6" and was wanting to use a high pinion front axle... I can get a D30 HP out of an older XJ but was curious as to the widths of the XJ axle on a ZJ.... has anyone done this swap before? I'm sure there has but I haven't found one to talk to yet.

also I'm retaining the NP249 and dont know if a change over to U joints on the front would be any problem...

yeah I know newbish questions I know anything over 4" on a ZJ can be a pain in the ass but I just want answers one these two questions if you can.

I don't know about the axle width, but think they are the same. If not, you could use spacers or proper backspacing on wheels to get you close. In regards to the front drive shaft, I think some ZJ's came with U jointed front shafts. My ZJ had one when I bought it. I was at just under 5 inches with the stock drivelines and had no problems. Others have gone higher with no problems. Every vehicle is a little different. I think you might need to have a shaft made if you are using a high pinion 30 though.

All ZJ, TJ and XJ front axles are the same width and same brackets.. 100% interchangable..
This is correct.

I have the HP30. I ditched the 249 for a 231. If you have a CV driveshaft you will have to switch over the pinion yoke, although I highly recommend you ditch the CV driveshaft at 6" of lift. It does not have enough travel.

If you keep the 249 you will feel the axle U-joints in tight turns and it will add extra wear on the viscous coupler.

Also, look for a non vacuum HP30.

Not a big deal but if you have cam bolts on the LCAs they do not work with XJ HP30s.
