I was hoping someone with similar problem could tell me why my 95 5.2 transmission makes a clunk noise (sometimes) when shifted into gear and does not shift past 2ND gear? 249J Transfer case was replaced a couple of months ago.

When I got it fluid was a little low added so I added ATF 4. Fluid looked clean didn't smell but haven't dropped the pan yet to check for metal shavings. Would a complete tranny fluid and filter change cure the clunk/no shift pass 2ND gear problem?

Well if the fluids are fine, i'd think its more or less the governor solenoid has taken a dive. I'll look it up on ShopKey and see what i can find for you.

Shift solenoid is notorious for going bad on these. ShopKey said it could also just be a stuck valve preventing it from coming out of 2nd.

Where is the shift solenoid located? Is it something I can hit with a really big hammer or is it easy to replace? [smilie=bal_thanx.gif] for all your help

Hey 95zj,

it sounds to me like a stuck valve, Possibly Worth Fixing but if there going to change the stuck valves you might as well upgrade your transmission depending on how much cash you have...

If not bring it to your local shop or change them out your self.

I would also Check your oil for metal Shavings and see if there are any. In some cases inside Jeep transmissions the torque converters will Kill them selves if the valve get stuck

I know this because it has happend to me

BTW Its a Truck it will always have noises dont worry about the clunk i have a new transmission and mine clunks in and out of gears

REPLACE transmission ahh!!! I had the transfer case replaced with another 249J before I found this [smilie=bal_cool.gif] site with all information NAGCA. Sounds like I should of replaced with a 231 or 242 because of that stupid vicious coupler in mine. Now I'm wondering if I should put on E-bay before dumping more money in it?

The shift solenoid is not a big deal, if that's what it is. If you have no experience in rebuilding trannies then take it to a shop to get it replaced and tell them what you think it might be.
