Need help with Brakes for 96

Hey All,

I am going to be replacing my brakes soon enough on my 96 4.slow and was wondering what kind of feedback you all could give me.

I plan replacing the stock rotors with crossdrilled ones from ebay. I have seen many for sale at decent prices and was wondering if anyones tried them? how did they hold up? any recomendations?

I wanted to upgrade to EBC Greenstuff pads front n back... whats your thoughts? worth the money?

my jeep is on 2"bb with 31s and i was hoping to get alil more stopping power.. you know with all that power under the hood ;)

any suggestions are appreciated.

replace your rubber flexible lines with stainless lines and that will also help a little.ebc is a good choice,but more expensive than stock replacement parts,which are cheap.

If you are looking for better stopping power, look at the co-effecient of friction of the pads. The higher the coefficient, the faster they will stop. I like Hawks because I have used them a lot. I have also heard great things about EBC.

By the way, many aftermarket pads will dust more than factory pads. If you have nice wheels, this may require you to clean them more frequently.

thanks for the information amigos.

360man- ive read about why this is, it would def be worth it but not sure if itll stay where it is or go up, if i go up more & switch to a real lift i may do this upgrade then since most kits require longer brake lines.

Iroc Z- ive read about the co-efficeint from the ebc website thus my thoughts on the greenstuff pads, what hawk pads do you use? Are jeep wheels supposed to be clean? ;)

Tharlan- thanks for the feedback, do you know what dealer you got them from? Ive seen many dealers selling them and wasnt sure if there was much difference.


Also, with this upgrade to pads n rotors have you guys noticed a significant change in the stopping distance / Braking power? Would you recomend it or just go with stock stuff?

On my new setup, I am going with EBC yellow in the front and green in the rear. I decided to get OEM replcement rotors, and spend the money for the EBC pads

Big Clay, whats the reason for the yellow up front? Im curious.

Also, for the rear ebrake set up, does this usually come with the rear brakes or is this a kit I need to buy seperately? 1st jeep with disk in rear, Any tips for this? My pops seems to think itll be a PITA to replace the rears but I dont see much difference.

I have a 8.8 going in the rear and a waggy 44 in the front. The 44 rotor is larger than the 8.8 so it will be doing more of the stopping power. Also my theory is that most trucks/cars used to have discs in the front and drums in the rear, so the front must pull more of the stopping load. No real data to back any of this up, just my thoughts.

big clay, I agree that the fronts do more of the stopping than the rear, ive wasted way more fronts in my driving than rears. I will look into the yellowstuff and compare, its been a month since i read up on the EBC pads. my goal is to reduce stopping distance with out killing the bank.

Cross drilled rotors actually do NOT stop any better than stock (in normal or off-road driving). Some tests show them as actually worse.

They stay a little cooler sometimes in frequent high speed, high effort braking with a slight reduction in fade (racing).

There can be issues if/when the drilled holes fill with mud.

I would not ever get them for a GC used off road.

Usually people get them for visual 'cool' factor. You can paint your calipers, too.

tcar - thanks for those points.

reason for the cross drilled is since the jeep has larger tires on it, its probably takin more to stop it at current state ( brakes are wearing down)and increasing the heat while stoping, so i figured for the price of the Crossdrilled, it would be a slight upgrade incomparsion to stocks also, it doesnt see much mud n grime at this part of its life (203K mile DD) with the feed back ive received so far, looks like these will be gettin ordered soon.

as for painting the calipers. only if it makes them work better.. which brings me to this, do they make better performing calipers for ZJs? didnt expland my search as i figured they did not.

First Hand experience, I have had the same set on both ZJ's and they DO stop better than stock. I used them plenty offroad and in MUD.

Stopped perfectly...

They stay cooler therefor reducing the chance they will warp.

I've never worried about "cool factor" just what works, how cool is a half purple half black ZJ with hacked fenders?

This is the same person I ordered both sets from the first set was probably 4-5 years ago, and the most recent set was less than 6 months ago. Fast shipping and no fitting problems.

Oh and just to add on, this is a front D44 that I was going to put in. Setup by a Jeepspeed guy. Thats desert racing they see plenty of dirt mud and anything else.

Cross Drilled are better than stock, why else would after market production, go fast people, ect use them all the time.

Jeep- i am not that familier with the ringwood area but its not too far from me. I do a good amount of mtbiking and I heard there are some great trails to ride up that ways.
