The sounds you hear are totally normal. The reason it clicks is because the locker is basically disengaged and is letting the tires rotate at different two different speeds. When the tires lose traction the locker will engage and stop clicking and lock both sides of the axle up causing the wheels to rotate at the same rate/speed.

Here is a cool video on how a differential works... It will also give you an idea on how a locker would work as well.

Well... tonight i was on my way to take some friends home that were stranded at a local park. On my way home i wasgoing down a small hill, 4hi in 2nd gear because of the sleet/ snow mixture. slowed down to 25mph for a turn at the bottom of the hill, rear end slid out, brought it back (now facing straight) lost all control: wouldn't steer even though the wheels were locked to the left, could not stop. Slid down a little ditch while gaining speed. Hit a bolder with the right front bumper and tire. Tire sheered off leaving the lug nuts on the studs! bent 2 of them. Bent the lower control arm mount, bent my bumper back that pushed up and broke the light... pictures will be up tomorrow =( sad day for the Dragon... and does anyone know if a D30 out of a '89 XJ would bolt right up? i know the gears must be the same...

Dang man, you have some awful luck! That bumper is stout, so you must have hit it pretty hard to bend it! Sorry man.

As for the XJ d30, yes it should bolt right up.

Yeah, as soon as I started sliding it gained like 10mph so I hit it like doing 35ish... I hit it very hard, I'm just glad I'm okay and my friends are... And that I didn't roll. But good about the axle! I have a friend on his way now to come help me now. I'll have pictures up later

Well my spare D30 has different gears and a few things are bent so i guess I'll be getting the Jeepspeed LCA brackets tomorrow. So far i bought new rotors, checked the axles, gears, and everything like that. Just need to weld the new brackets on and fix the hole where the caliper bolts too. (got a little stripped when i wrecked) Here are some pictures.
The damage

Good lord, when you f*ck something up, you do it right! So sorry man. I would never have believed that front bumper would split at the weld likr that. That is rough man, good thing you are OK, because that looks like was one heck of a collision.

Yeah, if that bumper wasn't there.... I would have totaled it. But I can always weld it back and work on it some. And your right it was a hard hit, and I'm just glad me and my friends are okay. I actually got it to leap home around 1am too. But as far as the damage, I'm just going to get the jeepspeed 1/4" steel LCA brackets and weld them on. I have herd good things about them. So I'll give it a shot

I am not sure if just the LCA mounts are what is messed up. With that kind of damage, I bet everything under there is tweaked. I bet your "frame" side mounts are also messed up. That axle may never align properly and if you drive it on the road much (which I think you do) it would be a royal PITA. If it were me, I would look at the JY for a comlete replacement front axle.

My ZJ had an accident, similar to that one with the p.o. I had the LCA mount rewelded, and drove it like that for a few thousand miles. Broke a CV shaft on that side, and after removing the axle, suspect that it is bent. I replaced it with an HP 30 out of a XJ with 4:10's. I had the rear rebuilt, and added some 4:10's. I have two inches of BB, with an inch sag from bumper and winch. With the d-shaft in I hit a pot-hole on the road, and took out the neutral safety switch plug on the bottom of the tranny with the front d-shaft. Lost 2 quarts of fluid. I have my lift ready to go on, and have the d-shaft out until install. You may have enough clearance for the tranny, as my Jeep is a 5.9L. It's bolt on, and if you want to retain ABS, you can put the ZJ knuckles on the HP 30, and retain the CV shafts with the tone ring, from what I've found on the internet.

An auto locker sucks in snow. You put it in 4x4, and it will lock up on you. As described, it will push the vehicle straight ahead no matter how much you turn the wheel. Selectable lockers up front, are the only way to go in places that you'll have snow.

Okay thanks guys! I guess i'll be at the junk yard this weekend, i'd rather have a new axle just to be sure. But AGRANDADDICTION, I have no locker and i have a LP d30.
BigClay: is it possible to swap the gears already in my D30 with another D30 with different gears? What if i got a HP d30 instead of a LP? And i did bend the LCA uni-body mount a tad...

You can swap the gears from one LP 30 to another, but not to a HP 30, they are reverse cut. My advice, for the cheap, get a lpd30 from another ZJ and swap it over.

The advantage of a HP over a LP is mainly ground clearance. An XJ hpd30 is also marginally stronger than the ZJ lpd30 from what I hear. I decided to go with a waggy 44 front to gain some strength and get rid of unit bearings.

Main advantage of the HP is less angle on front d-shaft with a lift. This helps reduce drive line vibes.

I thought you had a front locker in there. sorry about that...
