96 grand cherokee v8. new kickdown cable and new governor pressure soilenoid and sensor... still no overdrive!???!!! the cable is adjusted to the correct setting, tranny fluid is full. changed filter and fluid a month ago and again about 20 minutes ago when i put the two tranny sensors in. what else is there? the overdrive button works fine, light only goes on when i push it. it goes in to lockup when driving, just not overdrive lockup. very confused... would like any ideas, someone on here has to have ideas... please dont just look at this post and click off, have lots of looks at my previous post yet no replies!

I don't have any idea either, but if you will call Brickner Motors in Little Chicago, WI. ( It's about 20 miles west of Wausau) and ask for Rodney. He's the service manager and he is the best.

Good Luck, Doug

could be a computer issue. does your jeep run in the proper 180-210* range? Low engine temps can cause no OD or no lockup conditions.

yes the temp runs normal at right under 210. a shop tried hooking there snap on scanner to the port and it couldnt connect to the computer.... would that be something to do with it? maybe someone put a different computer on it? hasnt worked since i bought it, except one day it worked randomly for about an hour.... never again since then tho

i would say the computer would be a good start, hopefully you know someone at a parts store or a junk yard and they will let you take a new one for a spin see what happens, but if a scanner couldnt connect to it then you obviously have some electrical malfuntion and since the OD works off of electionics to engague then you should start with what you know is wrong.

good luck

what would i do? plug a different pcm in? is that what its called? where is the part located? not good with electronics... but pretty good at figuring things out so its worth a try. maybe someone put the wrong year computer in? short? i dont know...

could it be the overdrive clutches are bad and i am just trying to trace a problem that doesnt exist??? or the odds better its something simple

yea the computer is again the back pass wall of the engine bay, and im only guessing that it could be a problem... i dont have the slighest idea where the wires go, but from looking at a manual shifter in a different thred the tranny is controlled my 2 silinoids with a wire going to each, if one of those is bad or a wire is broke or grounded out it could be the problem

also your tranny might just be shot, the OD ring might be bad.

i have a hyundai that keeps blowing a fuse that controls the OD and the rear wiper, leave it to the koreans to put those 2 together, but it will work for a while then pop it could be something as simple as a fuse, diagnosis is a costly venture for a reason it sucks to do and a lot of time leads to nothing.

start small then go big, buy a chiltons manual, check EVERY fuse check ever relay (meaning take the pass kick out and swap relays in and out, it sucks you have to drive it to figure out if it works but thats life. check the relays and fuses under the hood... inspect around any and all plugs on the tranny itself look for cracks in the plastic, pulled wires (maybe one got to close to a loose exhaust).. there are a million things that the OD could fail for, if it was 2nd gear it would be easy.

good luck man, because im pretty much out of ideas - next peice of advice is call a tranny shop

You should probably take it to the dealer and have them scan it. The snap on scanners will not always have the right programming to read the TCM, transmission control module, but the DRB III will read it if it is not dead. If the clutches were bad it would probably try to shift but instead would just slip. Does it have a check engine light on? do the rest of the gears shift and work normally? I dkn if I'd go junkyard hopping for a PCM the trans controller is in the pcm but with many different configurations and options the odds of actually getting the right 1 is pretty slim.

yeah the rest of the gears work like it just came off the lot. So if i found a 96 grand cherokee limited v8 in the junk yard why wouldnt it be the same pcm? there is only one tranny offered that year and if its the same motor everything should be the same??? i hate to go the dealer and get ripped off but if nothing comes up by the end of the week i might have to. also when i do the key deal to check codes i have to do it 4x and the codes seem to come up different than the chart i found on the internet... the ones that come up seem like they read from the chart for the 98-02 i think it was... ill check them again and put the codes on here... i know i got a 45 which is: Trans temperature/ Governor pressure voltage out of range. Less than 1.55 or above 3.73volts for temperature and less than .1 or above 4.89 volts. Trans temp. to high or low. OD switch input too low for more than 5 mins.

got this info from the following website, the third main chart down...

oh and i saw people talking about the od light will flash with codes but mine will not do that at all... mine just shows the numbers on the digital display for where the mileage is up. turn the key 4x the check gauges light comes on then it goes through the codes til ends with 55

codes come up as... 12 37 21 55. 21 oxygen sensor... which i understand cuz the wires got ripped off somehow... 37 is i think this

No speed difference detected at 3 to 4 shift or no lockup in torque converter. Problem with trans solenoid with wrong pressure or voltage. Speed to trans ratio below minium required. Park/Neutral switch stuck.

whats that mean then for what is wrong??

If you run it and get it good and warmed up by driving it do the codes change? The temp sensor code could just be cause the tranny is cold.

Why does everyone think that the dealership is a rip off? I worked for a chrysler, dodge, jeep dealer and we did the opposite of ripping anyone off? We as the techs constantly got screwed to benefit the customer.

same code comes no matter how hot i get it... i just think its odd it never worked then one day it did for like an hour and then never again worked...
