I just recently bought a 99 4.7L 8cyl.Quadra-Drive Jeep Grand Cherokee that just rolled over 200060 miles. In the morning the oil pressure gauge comes on along with the air bag & low coolant.. I'm posting because there is a horrible popping noise and we're not sure what's the cause, we've replaced one cv axle joint on the front driver's side it stopped the noise for a little while but then came back, just kinda hoping I'm not the only person who's had this issue and someone might be able to help me before I start throwing money into it I don't want purchase unnecessary items if possible. Thank you for reading my post and all opinions & help is appreciated

It's worth letting us know if you've inspected the other joints? Might help narrow down what's been done so we can move onto other tips.

A friend of ours is a mechanic he said "its a jeep thing" that the popping noise is normal and due to such high mileage it will happen... Honestly I don't believe that, I'm starting to wonder if its the transfer case or something around that area but it could be the bushings too, don't think a bad shock could possibly cause this? It pops at high speeds and when slowing down which has me bumfuzzled of course I'm not a mechanic either so..
The other day while going down the road the brake on the front driver's side came lose got to looking and there was no bolt fun stuff! Lol. Has me thinking this vehicle might have been totaled at some point and rebuilt even though it has a clear non rebuilt title but that's just my opinion..

Alright so both front cv joint and wheel bearings have been changed its not popping as bad or should I say as loud, could it maybe be a front end differential? I asked just to make sure and he said everything underneath is fine however he did say the front drive shaft wiggles forward and backwards

Does ur front drive shaft have cv joints at both ends? Either way if u can move it back and forth replace it. They call it a prop shaft. I just put a new one in on ky GC. had the same noise u r talking about. They are not cheap also there are rebuild kits for it. To do a check. Look at the boots r they ripped also? I used a grease needle and loaded both ends with grease noise went away for a couple days. But still lots of play. Swapped in the new prop shaft and a million times better and quieter too. If there is play in that shaft it is a noise maker and sounds tinny and at times like a busted or worn cv joint.

He said that's probably what it is, so how much money an I looking at?
try 1st to find a used one in A1 shape!
CV joints at both ends? or just the diff side? make sure you get the correct one.
Mine had CV at BOTH ends the most costly one :(
any ways at the dealership (here in Canada) Chrysler wanted $917.00 + core
I got a re-manufactured one for $675 no core charge.

I'm sure that is what it is!!
rebuild kits for them are around $100

He looked at a few online he said the price was between $150-$300+ I'm not sure what he has in mind I'll just be happy to get the problem fixed. I'm not sure I'll have to ask him again but I do believe he said it did, oh wow that's insane! I hope so this is our first nice vehicle besides a 95 Chevy 3/4 ton long wheel base 3 speed on the column wasn't a bad truck just needed some minor work done. I'll look around and see what I can find thank you!

cheaper ones I found had the CV style in the front (diff side) and normal U-joint at the back (t-case).
It is the one with CV style at both ends that is the BIG $ one. double check yours for what style!
good luck!

I have a question now the grease needle how does that work? He is interested in trying that out until we can order the part, is it available at places like Advance Auto, Auto Zone etc?

Yes just snap the needle into the end of ur grease gun. Poke it into the boot and shoot grease into the cv joint. Do both ends. This will NOT fix the problem but if it quiets down u know u r in the right spot. Will take a mile or so for the grease to work around. Dont b shy on the grease either. On the transfer case end id b willing to bet that boot is ripped and u can prolly poke ur finger right in there. Fill her up will grease. Again this is not a fix but if it quiets it down u know what u need to replace. Swap that shaft out!!!
