you can switch the T case from WJ to ZJ! i did it to my 1998 ZJ 4.0 from 2000 WJ 4.0! For this job you need some additional parts!
1. mainshaft http://www.jeep4x4center.com/product-information.asp?number=4798145 which has thread for speedo gear
2. back case http://www.jeep4x4center.com/product-information.asp?number=83503156
3. the case for speedo sensor with hole!or you can make some driling with original case!
4. you can use speedo from 249 t case
5. need leveler from xj/zj tcase(which switch the positions and are bolted on tcase)

Got a NP242 from a '98 ZJ, what is up with the rear driveshaft?

Thanks for the write-up and to all for the informative contributions. I haven't seen this info added on this thread or any other, so here goes.

I just bought a '95 ZJ with a NV249, with the plan to swap to NP242. I picked up a 242 from a '98 ZJ, and it came with both front & rear driveshafts. This is fortunate because it does NOT appear to have the same type of rear driveshaft that is currently in my '95. Instead of an exposed sliding yoke that is in my ZJ and is in all of the write-ups I have seen, this one has a sliding arrangement concealed in a bellows. Here is a pic:

This setup looks like the driveshaft in my '02 WJ, but I saw the rig it came out of and it was definitely a ZJ. Does anyone know if I can just bolt this unit into my '95 ZJ using the driveshaft that came with the new TC? It seems to me the length must be the same, since the axle can't be any closer or further away in my rig than the donor. Was this a development that showed up on some of the later ZJ's? Also, does anyone have any experience with lifting a vehicle equipped with this type of driveshaft? I'm planning not to exceed 4 inches of lift or 31" tires, so I was planning to avoid adding a SYE.

One more possible compatibility issue: note that the pic shows a 3-conductor plug on the tailshaft housing where there is normally a speedo cable. It looks like the attachment plate is the same size & dimension as a speedo cable drive, so I'm hoping I can just pop this one out and bolt in my existing cable drive.

Oh, and please don't suggest that I just go outside and crawl under my ZJ to measure, etc. My new rig is at a friend's garage in another town, and I won't be seeing it first-hand again for another week or more. So any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Don'tvassume drive shafts are equal.. Dub j has 44a vs 35 rear end.. Trust me shafts are different lengths. I swapped in a 44a and neither shaft was right I had to get the 44 ds cut down to fit.

An sye is not for lift angles it has to do w drive shaft applications double cardon vs solid w slip yoke.
This is particularly beneficial when a situation arises where you need to remove tge rear DS to limp home. Witg a slip yoke removed the t case dumps atf out the back.

Measure trans input gears on both cases. My 242 was off An Xj so they were off. You have same engine but different trans may mean different input shaft. This isn't a big deal crack both cases swap sun gears and reassemble.

All in all its an easy swap.. Hardest part being top passenger tc bolt. I cut a wrench and notched it for thin rope. For leverage. Good luck

This goes against pretty much everything I thought I knew from reading this forum and NAXJA when I owned an XJ before.

I understand that installing a slip yoke eliminator allows use of a double cardan drive shaft, but I thought the whole point of doing that was to cope with the extreme drive line angles resulting from higher lifts. From what I have read, both for XJs and ZJs the max tolerance seems to be about a 4" lift before a SYE is needed.

Just wondering: do others on the forum agree that a SYE is not used to overcome steep DS angles resulting from lifting a rig?

Don't get .e wrong an sye helps pinion angles nothing much mote then adj CAs in my opinion.. Your info must be at least slightly off as My Zj w Xj 242 and sy is on 5.5" lift and Mt buddys Xj is on 6.5 no sye..

I was also pointing out another positive of sye..

I got one to install for better stronger Ds and rear ds removal not pinion angle was all I'm getting at. They are a good idea on any lift

buttnaked,
I've just recently done a 247 -> 242 swap on my WJ and had some trouble finding the correct wiring harness used to illuminate the light on the dash when in 4part and 4low. I'm going post some info that I hope will help people buy the right cable.

There are two different wiring harnesses for the 242 transfer case. One is for 2001 and earlier 242s and the other for 2002 and later 242s. They changed from a 4-pin switch connector to a two pin in 2002.

Here are the part numbers for the two different 242 wiring harnesses:
4-pin (2001 and earlier) - 56041438AA Approx. $20

2-pin (2002 and later) - 56041899AB Approx. $30

You can easily tell which to buy by looking at the connector on the transfer case switch. You will count either 2 or 4 pins. The other end of the harness has the same connector for both styles.

Thanks!
