It is weird, it only leaks when I leave it sitting for at least 24 hours.
Overnight there is not a drop of fluid that drips from anywhere.Red fluid is at the bellhousing and on the transmission pan.What could be the problem that makes it only leak when it sits for along period of time.Please help before this turns into a problem.BY the way there is no slipping or anything.

Well, I don't know if this is exactly your problem, but.... I recently picked up a 1996 ZJ with the 42RE. It leaked just a little. If I parked it on a flat surface, no leaks. If I went on a long drive, it would leave maybe one or two drips. Underneath, I could see that there was fluid leaking off of the bell housing and just a tiny bit on the pan (blow back I suspected - not really the pan at all). Well, the short story is that the stupid dealership had no idea what kind of fluid went into the 42RE, couldn't tell me who serviced the transmission, and said that they would have added Dexron if it came to them. I decided to change the transmission fluid and the internal filter, add a drain, etc. I found that the pan gasket was hard to get off, except in the front where it was not bonded to the pan. After I put the pan back together again, now my Jeep is barely damp underneath. It's so dry I just can't harley believe it. Then my aux. tranmission cooler blew a hose, and ........

Do yourself a favor and make sure the tranny oil pan bolts are tight. Just an idea.

a little fluid running out of the bellhousing, and possible blow-by on the pan could mean that the front shaft seal is on its way out, or it could mean that a bearing or a component of the fluid pump or torque converter is worn out...or is wearing out. I would suspect that it has something to do with the torque converter/pump. but first, try snugging the pan bolts...not too tight though. ALWAYS MAKE SURE...IF YOU HAVE THE 42RE - TO ONLY USE ATF+3...OR ATF+4 IF AVAILABLE. NEVER USE DEXRON. if the dealer stated that they used Dexron w/additive, have them change it immediately. They should know better!!

yeah, i found over half my trans pan bolts loose... i was loosing almost a quart a week.... :lol:


not always, but usually when the fluid leaks from inside the bellhousing, it is coming from the front pump seal. this can be just a bad seal, but more times than not it is the front pump bearing wearing and letting the pump cut into the seal. if it is just a small leak, i would just deal with it. pulling the trans and tc to change this is not a fun task nor is it cheap to have someone else do it. i steer away from letting someone take apart a good working trans just b/c it leaks a little.

Ready for this wierd one (speaking of tranny bolts). The exaust cross-over pipe (stock piece) is right infront of the tranny. The corner of the trany pan bolts look like the expanded with the heat, came loose and fell out. I'd post a pick but I have no idea how. So I have to repace a bunch of bolts now. Does anybody have any idea what sive the bolts are? THx

i would save time and aggrevation buy going to the stealership for those. i am sure you could match them at a hardware store if you wanted, but i doubt they are very expensive at the stealership.
