My '94 SE 4.0 is rated @5000 lb towing. I often tow older FSJ's using a tow dolly (over 5000 total, no brakes). Mileage runs about 9-11 mpg interstate @ 70 mph. This setup works OK, but it takes everything it has on some hills, and still loses speed. If you are buying specifically for towing, a 5.2 V-8 will doubtless perform better. For really serious towing, tho- a larger vechicle, such as a Chevy 2500HD with a Duramax diesel might be the answer.

The ZJ never had a 4.7.... The 4.7 started in 99 when the WJ model was released. Just for you info the 93-98 are ZJ models and 99-present are WJ models.

The 93-95 Have a Dana 35 rear differential and 96-98 have an aluminum Dana 44 rear differential. The 5.9 was only used in the 98 Limited 5.9 model.

If you live in the flatland part of our country then the 4.0 will work. If there are hills or mountains then get the 5.2 or 5.9. Upgrade the brakes to either Stillen or Power Stop cross drilled rotors front and rear. Add a trans and power steering cooler and enjoy.
