I got this noise coming from the rear of my 98ZJ... sounds like a tire rubbing or a similar type sound.... I only hear it when turning a corner from a stop. Also seems to get worse after a long drive on the hwy?? Ive checked for rubbing etc... Im stumped? Im thinking maybe its coming from the diff... anyone experienced this? any ideas would help.

Thanks

Hay man I have that same problem. I also can't see anything wrong; the only thing I can think of is maybe a caliper sticking after it gets hot. The problem is so intermitted, I was going to take it in to the dealer but they will most likely say they can’t reproduce it. I am going to pull the back breaks apart this week and check it out. I know this dose not help much but at lest you’re not alone with this problem. I am dying to get to the bottom of this problem.

I have a 98 also with a BB+UC lift and adjustable track bar ever else stock.

Kinda hard to say what it is. I had a similar problem and it ended up being the ring/pinion gears in the rear diff. Go look at Randy's Ring and Pinion Site and see if you've got any of the listed problems.

You hear it only when you turn? Does it matter which way you're turning? The reason that I ask is because my right wheel bearing are going out and it only makes noise when the bearings are under load.

Just something to look at.

I hear it when I turn left or right. Looking at Randy's it almost sound like Positraction Chatter. You can feel something release in the rear and a little jerking like the rear is hopping or skipping.

From Randy’s

{(It is most prevalent when backing up in a parking lot (when everyone around can stare), and gets worse as the differential heats up. It also tends to show up on freeway off-ramps and when turning while taking off from a stop sign)}

Sound more and more like this is the problem.
