i have a dana 44 rear end out from under a wagoneer that i am planning to put under the rear of my XJ, but i dont know what is involved or what it will take to make it bolt up underneath my XJ. any info would be greatly appreciated thank you guys very much.
Honestly, other than the bolt patterns being different, I have no idea. I would assume the spring perches are not in the same place, so you would have to re-weld those.
My advice is to check into NAXJA.com. That would be a more definitive source of info for the XJ.
edit: now that I think about it, I'm not even 100% certain the bolt patterns are different. They might be the same, but the spring perches are likely different.
are you wanting to swap in a d35 in place of a 44a? or vis versa?
if youre swapping in the 35, id say the difference is FAIL.
but they should both swap out with no extra mods (assuming both are disc brakes). You may have to lengthen/shorten your driveshaft depending on tcase and lift height.
I assume thats a FSJ Wagoneer? The bolt patterns are definitely different, the FSJ had a 6x5.5, an XJ is 5x4.5.
The sprint perches are not in the same location. Probably set wider on the FSJ.
The shock mounts are placed differently and not in the same location on the axle
The gear ratio is different. The late 80's\early 90's Wagoneers (which I assume you got that from since the D44 in 70's wags were offset) had either a 2.73 gear ratio or a 3.31 if it had a tow package. The XJ's had a variety of ratio's, but none that matched the two I mentioned from later FSJ's.
i swapped a 8.25 chrysler into my xj. its just about as strong as a dana 44. the early 90's are 27 spline and the last of the xj's are 29 spline i would have to re look up the year switch. try to find one out of a xj w/ a 2.5l, they have 4.10s in. i got mine from a friend who was junking his. if you have to have a 44, 89 xj with towing package had them but they are hard to find.
