Ok I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 V8, and the 247 TC. My TC is done for and I have decided to swap it for a 242 TC. Here is the deal: Everybody keeps saying that the 242 must come out of a 02-03 4.7 Grand Cherokee, but I found a 242 out of a 2000 4.7 Grand Cherokee. What is the difference? Also what "ALL" do I need to complete this swap? Please reply soon, thank you

The reason why is that your 247 has a longer input shaft than anything else Jeep has ever used or will use again. Go Figure!! I guess we're special. I have the same thing as you and used a 231 out of a XJ but changed out the input shaft and was good to go.
Good Luck With Your Project.

I did the same as jeepman, I just got one from a tj. The only thing when doing a 231 is it has to be a 97 or newer cause the gear cut in the t-case. And really to swap out the shafts is the easy.

The only problem I ran into which baffled me for a short period was I was loosing fluid from my T ase but it wasn't leaking out. I decided it was the front seal and was leaking into the adapter so I kept filling it and filling it and filling it till I realized I had put more fluid in it than the case and adapter could hold. So I pulled it back apart and found there is a metal slug about the size of a quarter inside the input shaft that had been dislodged. I was actaully backfilling the transmission from the transfercase input shaft. Once I put the slug back in, everyhting has been fince since.
