Hey Guys, I just got an email back from the Michigan State Police on driving a ZJ without doors, here it is:
Thank you for posting your question to the MSP website. It has been forwarded to my office for a response.
First I would read what the owners manual says about driving on the roadway without the doors on.
Then I will quote the first line of MCL 257.683 which states..."A person shall not drive or move or the owner shall not cause or knowingly permit to be driven or moved on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles which is in such an unsafe condition as to endanger a person"
Since Jeep probably puts doors on their vehicles for the same reasons as other manufacturers, to provide some protection to occupants in case of a crash, then operating the vehicle on a public roadway without the doors attached could be construed as endangering the occupants and would be a violation.

So I would quess that I will not be driving around without my doors at least near Sgt. Spink district. HA< HA

My '98 doesn't have a torx screw and is just clipped into the door. You then have to push the red tab to "unlock" it and finally there is a thumb tab on the top that has to be pressed before pulling apart. It's a pain to seperate them but a little elbow grease will get it done.
thaught i might throw some fuel on the fire went to tellico for a week and me and my budy both road all week in tellico and no problems putting the doors back on are rigs both 98 zjs plus 2 xj none of wich had doors on i had one door that would not close do to putting it on it's side but i have a cage as far as stess the pillar touched the cage when it went on the side
my.02 doors off for mild wheeling is ok but unless you have a cage you should leave them on for the hard shi#
The problem with comparing us to wranglers is this, in most states if the vehicle is offered in such a way by the manufacturer it is null and void to such laws. In California it is illegal to put window tint on any front windows i.e. the windshield and driver and passengers door, although if the vehicle comes from the manufacturer this way it is therefore legal. =(
Oh and if your worried about taking your doors off for structural reasons, put in a full cage that ties into your rocksliders and frame supports, it will deal with the flex, granted anytime you stiffen stuff like this other parts start flexing and will break soo um ya.
Makes no difference.. TJ doors have bolts holding them on from the factory..IF you have to remove bolts and I have to remove screws whats the difference..

As much as I agree with you and I plan on doing it on occasion and i live in hell er i mean Southern Cali, Wrangler doors all you have to do to take them off is lift them and they come off, at least thats how my YJ was.
Read through and tried to answer my own question but didn't see the answer. I have all power on my ZJ and was wondering will taking the doors off screw that up? Also what about my speakers, will taking the wiring harness out screw that up to? Really want to take them off when I wheel tomorrow but don't want to mess up my power windows and locks or my speakers? Thanx
The front speakers will play fine with the doors off... [smilie=bal_cool.gif]
Ok.. I am just being an ass.. If I remember correctly the back speakers will still play but you will not be able to roll the windows up and down because the main power to them comes from the drivers door.. So roll the windows down before you take the doors off..
They will work again as soon as you put them back on..
