so, i've had jeeps forever, my dub-jay, however, is my first with full-time 4x4.

if i have the wheels turned all the way while moving slow, it grabs...hard.

should the tires be scrubbing that hard, or do i have a problem with my VC

the problem exists with throttle or without.

It should a little with the 249..... If it becomes overly difficult to turn then your VC is kaput.
X2, The test for the VC to see if its shot is at idle do some figure 8's on flat ground and if you can idle through all the 8's then your VC is ok. If you have to gas it at all or give it any prodding then its kaput as solitude said. Hope that helps

if you have an 01 its a 247...when was the last time the fluid was changed...go to the dealership and get the fluid ask them for the TC fluid for a 247...the fluid has been updated form ATF+3 to this stuff...try this first before you swap out your case....and a 242hd out of 02-03 will bolt right up...just get the rear DS that 242hd came from and the bracket that mounts to the tranny so you can shift and the bezel inside that tell you what range your in...

p.s. your not in 4 lo when it does this are you?

well, i have no idea when it was changed last, as i just picked it up from a dealership who got it from an auction=no available history.

i don't have any plans on upgrading anything for wheeling purposes, this one's my baby hauler, so i don't need anything other than snow traction, leather, and a smooth ride.

i don't plan on screwing with this jeep too much, i'm not all that vested in it, i'd just trade it in for something newer, and convince the dealership that it's something that it's supposed to do that i put in custom and they'll probably pay me more for it (like i did for my wrangler with the whining tcase, haha)

and no, i'm not in 4lo

Change the fluid before you do anything else. Also, are all the tires the same model and size and do they have the same exact amount of tread on all of them? If the tires are different the transfer case acts funny for some odd reason.....

With the 249 you have to be careful when it comes to fluid. I'm sure that mine is junk right now from someone putting the type 3 tranny fluid in it. A jeep builder I know (Stephan at trailquest.com) warned me that because the 249 has a viscus coupler it should get only mopar nv249 oil. I've changed the fluid to try and correct it ,but I'm sure I'm too late. After things get warmed up my t-case will howl at me when I turn sharply. I also need to give it the throttle to get it to go. During the winter I had very few problems, probably due to the cold. But I'm sure when it gets good and warm again my symtoms will return.

Like buttnaked said, it is a 247...this is a WJ.
