My TC in my 1999 Grand (4.7) went out. It made a horrible popping noise since the day I got it. A tech @ a jeep dealership told me it was a normal noise for that year. Needless to say, I was out playing in the mud when it made it's last POP! My father in law has a 249 TC with 20,000 miles. Can I replace my 247 TC out of my WJ with his 249 TC out of a ZJ?

Thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it. My 99 limited has made a horrible popping noise since the day I got it, it sounded as if the chain was slipping in the transfer case. (I took it in to the dealership and they said it was a normal noise and gave me some technical bulletins about changing the input shaft and if that didn't work grinding on the TC.) Well like i said, it made it's last pop when I was in about 8" of mud on a small hill, it kicked out like a mule and I spent 3 hours getting it on 2X10's so I could have my father in law pull me up over the hill! I was just thankful it was another Jeep that pulled me out :lol: N-e-ways, thanks for the input guys, but if i gotta buy a 231 TC I might as well look for a 247... (Hopefully it don't POP!) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a decent TC around here in Mich. We got dumped on with like 14" of snow so i haven't went out and actually checked it out real good. I did however check out the front DS to make sure, and of course it doesn't turn so I am all most positive it is in fact the TC. I would like to get away from this style of TC, I really put my WJ through hell. (they said Jeep is the toughest 4 letter word in the dictionary.) & Brother I put it to the test! I have climbed more hills, went in places no one would ever think I'd get into let alone out of and have made more people around me know that a jeep ain't no joke! Any suggestions on a tough TC besides a 247?
