I have a 98 5.9 and noticed my right rear axle seal was leaking after a 2 hour drive (out of town for work) i was due for an oil change so i took it to the local dealer and got a quote on the axle seal along with the oil change. the price was reasonable so i went ahead with it. half way through the day i get a call from the dealer saying the left side is leaking slightly. so i get them both done and when i pick it up at the end of the day they hit me with a massive bill that doesnt jive with the work and i end up in the service managers office getting the price adjusted to fit the job. also i am informed that the right shaft was corroded and they "cleaned it up" and may leak again and the axle would need to be replaced is it does. here is my question... the axle is leaking now and i want to know if it can be repaired with a sleave or something or does it need to be replaced all together? I dont want to go back to the dealer for fear of a real hack job after the "incident" any help is greatly appreciated.
sorry for the long post

The only thing that will fix the leak is a new seal. If the surface that rides on the seal is rough, or moving in an uneven path of travel, the new seal will go again, so the cause needs to be addressed. The only way to do this in your case is to replace the axle shaft along with the seal.

Ouch! I agree. I had the same thing happen on my XJ at about 130K miles. We emory clothed the axle where the seal rides and put it back in. It stopped for a while, but eventually the shaft had to be replaced.

thanks for the replies. i guess ill be getting a new shaft. Actually I am afraid to go back to that dealer because of the service i recieved the first time. Its not my local dealer so i am not losing any sleep over it. I seemed as though they were trying to milk some more money out of an unsuspecting customer. the cost issue was rectified and the service manager said he would get to the bottom of things.
thanks again
