Anybody try to use a Mopar performance computer on there 5.2 GC. I know someone that has one for a Dodge truck for the same year as my GC with the same motor and wanted to know if it will work. I talked to jegs and they said yes but still not sure and want to mess anything up. P/N is P5249545
I did not see one listed for the GC's. I have a few mods to help it out K&N FIPK, flowmaster, larger exhaust and MSD coil.

Thanks

It is all going to depend on the year and transmission you have. I know that before 96 the jeep transmissions we hydraulic so the computer doesn't control it, but you need the computer that is not going to be looking for the transmission or it will through a code.
I have swapped a 5.9l into my 95 so I was planning on using the computer for the 5.9l 4x4 ram or dakota...I believe they are the same part number. I know that there isn't one for a 95 grand with a 5.9l because there has not been such a thing from the factory. I will let you know how it goes.

yeah, i want to learn more too. every thread i see says different things. some people like them some people don't. i swear ive heard so many different things on ecu's that im more confused now than ever! ha..but i would like to get one for my 93... this month i have added intake and a high flow cat with full exhaust, so im kinda on a horsepower trip. i want to get headers and an ecu upgrade so i can squeeze out a couple more ponies. but dont know where to find the info i need. let me know if you guys find anything

I tried the ECU in my 94 Grand and it ran like total shit. It did not throw any codes but fell on its face when I stepped on it.

thank you, thats the info i want to hear. what kind of ecu was it?

Mine runs like a champ. I like not having the top end limiter and the shift points being higher.

texas...what kind of ecu are you running??? you said it runs great, but no brand!

The one I was trying to use was not GC specific. It was for the same year and motor but for a dodge truck. They have one specific for the GC.

It doesn't change the shift points on the 46rh, as that is hydraulic and not electric. It does on the 96 and newer ones though. The key thing to remember about the mopar performance pcm (ecu) is that you have to run 93 octane or it will run like crap. It changes the timing and makes it where you need the extra octane to eliminate detonation.

yeah see, ive heard that before and ive herad you don't. on a side note, ive heard that the 5.9 needs to be run with 93 but then ive heard it doesnt.

I have a performance ECU in a 5.9 and it runs fine , no problems.......... no real difference from the way it ran before. The thing you will notice will be the fact that you will have to run higher octane fuel to keep the ping down. I feel like I spent $300 to buy a spare ECU (sucker comes to mind)!!

Texas ZJ1 you can change the shift point without spending so much money but hey if you like it that's great!! [smilie=bal_cool.gif]

If you want to change the way the 46rh shifts...B&M sells a shift kit for under a hundred bucks that makes it shift very firm and much faster. It also puts more fluid pressure on the discs so it is supposed to slip less and cause the tranny to last longer. And as we all know...offroading is the quickest way to shorten the life of a dodge tranny. The kit also allows you to hold any gear as long as you want. I have it in mine and I love it.

Also if you take that kit and combine it with a ratchet action shifter...it makes for a great vehicle both on and off the road. It makes it super easy to shift more like a manual which is great for either rockcrawling or...in my case Mud Drag Racing.

I have a short write up on it on my website under the ZJZilla projects page. It was too hard to install...it is a little intimidating when you pull the valve body off the tranny and see all the little check balls and screws. As long as you follow the instructions carefully it is really hard to screw up. The kit even comes with a guide plate that screws onto the valve body to drill the passage way the needs to be opened. I just checked on summit's website and the one I ordered is $57.95. It is the B&M Transpak for the A518, TF727 and also the "TorqueFlight" 46rh. Since all our tranny is is an overdrive version of the TF727 that makes it real easy to find parts for it. Like I said in my write-up on it...it is a great time to install the B&M deep aluminum transmission pan. It has a drain plug and that makes it real easy to do periodic oil changes. As we all know it is always better to keep fresh oil in the tranny. Primarily if we use it off-road alot.

I was also doing research on correcting transmission shift points and firmness on my 98 GC 5.2L and located the following kit: TRANSGO TFOD-HD2
founf it on E-bay for less then $100 shipped from a few sources

Kit quality is every bit as good as B&M I have used both kits over the years but never in a dodge application (jeep) currently have a transgo kit in a 98 Mustang GT with procharger and the kit is an absolute must for any performance automatic application.

I recently ordered a jet stage 1 chip and will also be ordering this transgo shift kit as well (price is right) ordered the jet chip as I have heard mixed info on mopar chip and no absolute part numbers that were sure to work.

Also factor was $280 for mopar versus $96 used Jet chip stage 1

Figured I would run the TRANSGO kit as I no exactly how well it works instead of gambling with a mopar ECU and whether the shift points are the way I want them to be.. Also line pressure is increased with kit and tranny life is increased.
