Lost everything but reverse.

I just bought a 98 zj, it had been sitting in a field for 4 years. Towed it out of the field, put a battery in it and surprisingly it fired right up. Made it a couple miles or so and it just quit moving forward... Reverse works fine. Got it home and did a trans fluid and filter change. Still no forward. Once or twice I was able to get it to go into drive but only for a few seconds. When I play around with the shifter I can feel/hear when I shift from P to R, R to N, and N to 1st but N to 1st still doesn't engage. I can't hear/feel any changes going from any gear to D or 2nd. Im just a YouTube mechanic and I don't know much about transmissions. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

sounds more like the governor and/or shift solenoid's have failed or have stuck.
The 42 series boxes are pretty much bullet proof if not over abused and the front and rear bands are adjusted to specification at each gearbox service.
Did you use ATF 4 oil and did you put enough oil back into the box as it depends if it has a stock pan or a high capacity pan to how much oil is required on a filter change.
Is there a way to test the governor / shift solenoid? And yes I used enough ATF + 4
