i have a stock 97 jeep GC 4.0 inline 6 and want to know if i would have enough lift to clear 31s with room for some flex if i went with a 3 inch coil spacer lift, and get bigger coil springs?

If you do spacers, just get 2" spacers. They are more than enough to clear 31's. Anything bigger than 2" and you will have some problems, unless you opt for a full lift kit.

What problems might come up? What about getting springs to lift it 2-3 inches in front, and then got some 1-2 inch spacers? would that be the same as a lift kit? or would problems arise there too?

I fit 31's stock. The fronts rub at lock but the rears tuck.

I don't really like spacer lifts, but if you have to do any at all I would go as small as possible.

Sorry if this is stupid question, but what do you mean they rub at lock? I'm not familiar with that term...I can fit 31s stock too, but when i was measuring them out and sizing them, when i turned to see if they rubbed when turning, they were hitting the front fender, and rubbing the control arm. If i went with a spacer lift, would i need to do any backspacing?

ah alright. So would you recommend getting a spacer lift and putting 31s on it, if you're just going to do mild wheeling, such as a few hill climbs, mud holes and just trails with nothing really major on them?

Another saga begins. A lot of us started out saying we were just going to do a 2"BB and 31s or 32s. I'm now on my 4th lift lift on my ZJ and $9000 poorer. Should have done the 4th lift first and would have saved a few bucks. I did the JKU Rubicon right the first time, but still big $$$$$.

A 2"BB will work well for 31s. When you start to go higher with any lift on a ZJ, you start to affect steering geometry. Higher will also create bowed springs unless you add adjustable control arms. Then the drive line has to be addressed and adjustable tracking bars. Some will say you don't need anything until you get over 5", but seasoned people know what I'm talking about. The point I'm trying to make it that 2" is a pretty simple and safe lift for modest offroading without problems. Add longer shocks and bump stops, and you're good to go on a lot of trails, but when you start to go higher, a lot more issues have to be addressed to make your ZJ reliable and safe.

Good Luck

I wont be doing anything major like rock crawling 7 feet up and rock wall, i just do what i call really nothing or just some mild wheeling. We go down to the river and there is a lot of mud pits, theres some dirt hills and such that are at most 10 feet tall and probably a 15-25% grade at best. but nothing major, and the most we do is going out to kansas rocks or tuttle creek ORV and do some wheeling out there, but we usually only make it to there maybe once a year. But what would you recommend...a 2-3 inch spacer, or i started looking into 2-3 bigger springs, and maybe add a 1.75 inch spacer to them to give me a little more clearance...would that be suitable?

As I mentioned above, a 2" spacer lift with new longer shocks and bump stops will do what you want to do on 31s. That's the most economical way to go. If I remember correctly, the stock tire was 28". That means that you will lose 10% of your power with 31s, but shouldn't be a problem. If you want to go a little higher, then I would go to a 3" coil spring lift with the proper shocks and bump stops and get 32" tires. With 3", though, you would need tracking bar drop brackets or adjustable tracking bars to get your axles centered. You could still get by with the stock control arms. "DO NOT" add spacers to a 3" lift for more height unless you are ready to buy adjustable control arms, CV driveshafts, and after market steering. Your ride will also be rougher because of the CA angles.

A 2" spacer kit on 31s or a 3" coil spring lift on 32s, are both good choices for what you want to do. Keep it simple.

31s rub with 3 - 4" of lift if you don't adjust bumpstops on a short arm lift. i run them on 3" lift and they rub sometimes: but they do 'fit'.

perhaps its best to say 'you can run them at 0" of lift, but they rub everywhere.

spacer lifts are a great way to get into a sport. specially one as costly as this; for 200$ you can get started on a set of 31s and really see what you want/need to do to your jeep.

many will say its a 'waste' of money, but in reality, if you run it for a year, figure out A: you're good on 2" then you win!
or B: you want to go bigger than 31s and stuff, then to be honest, that 200$ WAS well spent. you figure out what you want to do and what you actually want/need.

a 'true' waste of money is going 5" lift and NOT going with some sort of long arm setup: cause you WILL eventually go long arm................

good luck with it!
