It all started 5 weeks ago, driving home from work in my 95 Grand w/ I6/42RE/Select Track, I started hearing a high grinding sound from the tranny, it was the overdrive going out. Got home and had no reverse. I called my mechanic to set me up with a reman and then called the used car dealer to see if I was still in warranty [haha no] but he talked me into saving a $1000 by calling a local tranny guy he uses to do repair for him. So I took it the next town where I work and also bought the Grand Cherokee to the tranny guy. 2 weeks and $1265.00 later plus $60.00 for rental I was back on the road. 1 week later I started hearing the noise again, I went back to the tranny guy and talked to him on what went wrong? I asked him what type of fluid did he use? Synthetic! WHAT! I told him to flush it and use ATF+3, since he could not get to it for a week, I went to my mechanic and paid $135.00 for a flush and a SPANKING for not listening to him. 3 days later, the noise is getting louder and it is now shift bumping trying to find a gear to go in. I took it back to the tranny guy and said fix it under your warranty and call me when your done, I got a call that afternoon from him saying there was hardly any fluid in it, I told him, WRONG! I checked it before I drove to his town! He said maybe 3 to 5 quarts was in the torque converter and that breaks the warranty but he will do me a favor and fix it for cost of parts. ARRGH *#@!! Surpisingly? 2 days later a new warranty, new radiator, new tranny cooler and $745.00 back on the road. 1 day later, driving home from work I lost all tranny fluid, walked home and called "the tranny guy" he said to check for hose leaks. walked back to the Grand. crawled under and there was the return hose line unhooked from the radiator. The coupler is warn out and will not stay connected, a simple yank on it will disconnect from the radiator. walked to the local car parts store in my town and bought fluid ATF+3, high preasure hose and four clamps to fix it myself. $60.00 and back on the road. 1 week, 2 days $50.00 towing, the Grand is sitting in my parking spot. No forward gears or reverse, Torque Converter making ungodly noise and the tranny guy on the phone saying he can't figure out what it could be? But, he wants ME to call HIM on Monday after he dose some research and call a tech upstate. If I don't hear from him Monday I was calling the County Attorney on Tuesday. I paid $2215.00 for this $1000.00 savings, over a reman $1900.00 installed w/ new radiator and cooler. Now it is back to a rental for work travel $$$ anybody got some Ocian Front Property in Arizona to sell ?!? Learn from my Tranny Mistake. The Irony from all this, I am a CNC lathe, gear maker for a Nation wide heavy duty Transmission Company. The gear I make, goes into the back box of the transmission, simular to the back of our tranny's where the overdrive is.
