hey guys,
after an unfortunate game of tag with a semi  , i lost my xj and all the tricks of 7 years i had put into it. so now i have a 2000 wj 4.7 with the quadra drive. i am getting some minor binding and alot of (embarassing)noise during slow speed turning. What does anyone think this could be?

What kind of embarrassing noises are you talking about? Can you describe them? Is it simply a whining or is it a loud squeeling, or is it clunking, etc.. try to be as specific as possible...

As for the binding... that doesn't sound good...How many miles on it? What size tires? Any front end mods? (Track bar, aftermarket tie rod ends, etc) How about your cv boots are they sealed nicely, grease leaving out of them? Can you have a friend steer it while you check underneath for the source of the clunking and noise?

Just a couple of things to look at... Let me know..

Ok - Its stock as i just got it, but it is 4.7, quadra drive, 30K. i took it to the dealer and they said it was the differential and that the wrong fluids are in there, or at least no friction modifier. So i went home and changed the fluids as i did not feel like paying them 300 for a job i can do sleeping. The noise has gone away, but i am apprehensive that some damage has been done to the differential, hopefully it was not driven too long w/o the modifier.
it was almost like a power steering whine, but deeper. i never really felt any binding in the wheel though.
thanks for the reply.

keep in mind the 247 quadra trac transfer case has a fluid designed for that 'case and only that 'case. It's crucial that you use the factory fluid in it. If the viscous coupler fails, its about $700, for just the part!!

Thanks Tom

i don't think the bad fluid was in there very long, it looked pretty clean when i drained it. But i wanted to figure that out before i start doing any mods. I'm planning a 2.5"bb, new sway bars, k&n kit and tires to start. i'd like to do an exhaust system, but i am unsure of the benefits.
