There has been to much B.S. about a GSS and not enough action. Now what do I need to know? How, many of you would like there to be a GSS? More importantly, how many of you would attend?
Also, let me Know where in the South you would like to event to be. I can make all the arrangements and do all the planning, all you have to do is show up!

To make the counting of people wanting to attend easier, just vote YES if you would attend.

I've been throwing this around forever. Tellico would be the ideal southern place to have such an event. Pretty much all it takes is someone setting it up. I may setup an unofficial GSS if I get the time, but I'm graduating in December, so time before then is limited. if someone took the initiative to start one I'd definitely attend if the location/date was conducive to my schedule

I am trying to stop all the talking and get the ball rolling on this. Does Tellico have a web site I can visit to research more about the place?

Reshard.

I'm going to GSW June 13-15 and probably will be attending GSMW too, depending on when it is scheduled. These will be my first and second Grand Slam priorities this year. I would add a GSS to that list and attend it also, if there were no scheduling conflict with the other two.

jpmtx,
That is completely understandable. I want as many people to attend as possible. I am thinking the end of July, 25-27. This is Fri, Sat, and Sun.

What do you all think about the Super Lift ORV Park? You can Look and some cool trail pictures at there web site www.orvpark.com

www.tellico4x4.com has some good info. There is a big campground we stay at up there called crawfords, he has a full shop, heated showers, a rock garden, and i heard he just added a few cabins. Its about 15 minutes drive on mountain roads to the trail head. It'd be a good place for such an event. I have thought of picking a weekend a few months out and have an informal GSSE there, just a show up and wheel type of thing. Would make organization easier, but I know that a lot of people like their events a little more organized than that.
WE'll see what comes of all of this...
Randy-
Tellico would probbably be around 10 hours for you... convince scott to find a trailer big enough for 2 ZJs :)
Tim

Scott has turned Sally on us. I think he took his ZJ back to stock, or is planning to, at least. I have access to a trailer, just need something to tow it with, but that can be arranged.

I would love to come check out Tellico. Never been to that area of the country. Between GSW and GSMW would be a great time. Let's do it!!!

I am gettin a little experience planning Right Coast Run which is at Tellico every year. If there is enough intrest, I will jump in on this also and do some planning. But we will need some people to commit to trail leaders and such. Tellico is a great place for wheeling, but to be honest it's most fun for stock/intermediate, and extreme. That in the middle build type of Jeep will find things are not as challenging as you want and the hard stuff is too challenging. But no matter what you are, it really is a fun place to check out and it's constantly changing. You can bet it will be raining on any given weekend there and add a challenge no matter what your set up is. Tim and I are there what seems like every other month, so we are very familiar with the trails. I also agree with Tim on the informal type of thing. I've been to GSE, GSW, and GSMW of which GSE and GSW were the most organized and rightfully so. GSMW was more informal and that to righfully so. I can see a GSSE being the same way and working out best for everyone. This is also how our RCR event works well. As for dates, how about some time between GSE in June and GSME in Sept. It is the warmer months but that give people a chance to make all the events ;)

I have to be honest with you guys. Tellico seems to be a great place but it is kinda far east, but I don't mind calling it GSS if you don't :D.
I am still thinking of you guys in Texas. Yes, Tellico is far but think of the fun you will have. I went to map quest and you guys will have to pass through LA on the way. I think it would be a good idea if we formed a convoy there. It would be safer to have a travel buddy.
Pearce, you said, "As for dates, how about some time between GSE in June and GSME in Sept." The dates that I think would be good times are almost directly in the middle of June and Sept. (the last weekend of July). This gives us about 16 weeks.
So, it seems as thought TELLICO IT IS!!!
Pearce and Tim, could you guys be trail leaders for the event? If anyone knows those trails it would be you guys. I will try my hardest to visit Tellico during spring brake to hit the trails for myself and lead a group.

Reshard/Tim/Pearce

Currently, I'm planning two trips to Moab this summer, GSW June 13-15 and the San Antonio Jeep Exclusive (one of my jeep clubs) trip July 19-25. That would put me in conflict with anything planned in July.

Also, I just made some major modifications to my WJ that has made it Difficult-Extreme capable. But I plan on sticking to the Difficult and maybe Almost Extreme trails this summer, depending on how my off-road wheelin skills develop. So I thank you for giving me the "heads up" on the Stock/Moderate or Extreme trail choice at Tellico. Right now, Tellico would not be a good fit for me. But I am still interested in the GSMW in Sept as a possibility, assuming the Difficult trail option will be available there ... and would be interested in wheelin with you guys if we can all make it.

Don't let me impact your Tellico planning. But put me done as an "Interested but not Totally Committed Yet". If it were, say late August, I may have enough Difficult trail work under my belt to take a shot at the Extreme stuff with you. I do have a winch and all the other recovery stuff I could ever need ... and, while not in the Cody class, I'm not too concerned about my WJ's sheet metal.

Go ahead and set it up whenever it is convenient for you guys ... and I may just make it.

Reshard, check out the Jeeps of North Texas link below. Most of them live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. And they often go wheelin at Barnwell Mountain near Gilmer TX. Gilmer is a little north of Longview TX, real close to Shreveport LA. I figure it's about 285 miles from Lafayette, most of it Interstate 49. I just joined JNT last month and am trying to work a trip up north to wheel with them into my schedule, but I haven't been able to do so yet. I believe that there are about a half dozen ZJ/WJs in the club, so you may find it interesting. Meanwhile, thanks for starting this thread. It may turn into something yet.

A little offtopic, I know, but any info on this? Might be interesting in joining up. Don't want to do GSW but do want to go to Moab with my WJ.

Not off topic, I deliberately mentioned it in case any NAGCA folks (and especially anyone in Texas) might be interested.

I joined the San Antonio Jeep Exclusive after meeting them at the Y.O. Ranch Jeep Jamboree last year. They provide the trail leaders, etc. for that event and are a great bunch of guys and gals.

Membership costs $30 a year and entitles you to join them on their summer vacation trip if you are interested ... and this year's is MOAB.

It is a "jeeps only" club, just like the Jeeps of North Texas. They usually go wheelin every other weekend at "an undisclosed secure location" on private property near Utopia in the Texas Hill Country. Ain't Moab, but they have set up trails running from stock to intermediate to difficult to extreme (if not plain suicidal).

They are also going wheelin in Big Bend twice this year (April and October). So between SAJE and JNT, I figure that I have every decent four-wheelin location in Texas covered ... with the possible exception of Palo Duro. Love to have you join us as a member. Sure you will have a good time.

You can check them out further on their Internet site:

http://www.saje.4wdriver.com/

Their Internet site is not as sophisticated as JNTs. But their jeepin is real good.

I have to say that until you've experienced Tellico type trails, its hard to compare it to anything, expecially out west. Here's what I would conscider as the possible groupings and their baseline characteristics. We could go one step harder for a small group of no more than 5 people, but the difficulty of those trails mandates small group size.
Beginner-
Skid Plates, Rocker Protection, and 30-31" tires recommended. Smaller vehicles could be conscidered, but know that you're taking a greater risk of dammage with less than the above.
Intermediate All of the above plus 31-32" tires and some previous driver experience. One locker would help.
Advanced- 33+ tires and at least one locker, plus the above. Winch advised, body dammage is more likely but not unavoidable. This group would likely do SlickRock if weather and group size permit.
Superfly advanced- If we have enough interested and equiped people, (but less than 6) I'd conscider leading a group of people to some of the hardest trails at tellico... I'd appreciate dual lockers and a winch, 35s and up would be nice, but not mandatory. I'll be scouting trails of this level this weekend, so I'll let you know about that. Be advised that Tellico changes constantly from the weather and usage. I wouldn't say that body damage is a given anywhere there, but can definitely happen if you get careless. I'd be interested in doing this around the end of Middle to end of August, which seems to be a likely time for this event. I'll talk with pearce this weekend about this event, and since RCR is this weekend, that event will be behind him, so he'll have more time.
I'd rather call it GSSE or GST(Tellico) than GSS anyhow, so the texans could still have their GSS

Now you're talking, Tim. Move my name back into the Very Interested column. As far as I'm concerned, you can call it what you want. But Grand Slam Tellico has a nice, unambiguous, ring to it. And the amateur geographers wouldn't have anything to complain about.

Hope it works out.

Tim, it seems as though what you stated about this should be more of a meet and greet type of thing was the right idea. I can see that no one likes to held down with schedules. A more informal approach would be better.
Tim, Pearce, when ever you guys can make time, we are ready

tim and i are going to develop this idea this weekend while at Tellico and hopefuly scout some of the hardest trails weather permiting. I was going to get some time in on slick rock, an Advanceded trail as opposed to a superfly advanced trail based on tims scale but i broke my hand last night working on some new stuff :crazy So i will have to wait to get time on that later.

We'll get it going, and as I've said about the RCR thing, I dont care how many show up for it, I'll be there having a great time, lets just keep it casual.

Also, I like the sound of GST, Grand Slam Tellico. If not, then this would have to be a GSSE.
