:newbie: 97 ZJ. I noticed the front cv axle shaft boots on this truck were torn, wife took an 800 mile trip and when she came back the truck was making a clunking noise everytime she turned. So I went to my buddy at LAS CRUCES UNDER CAR PARTS and he rebuilt them for $140.00 both. Put them back on and the same clunking noise was still exactly the same, so I drove the truck to that same buddy and he said the differential assembly needed an overhaul. I took the truck to the lot I bought it from and told them about in needing a new front diff. They agreed to take it to their personal mechanic shop. Next day I got a call from their mechanic and he said the truck was ready. I picked up the truck and the clunking was gone, he did not overhaul the diff but told me the front drive shaft was rebuilt! The lot made me give them $140.00 and I agreed, they said it was half of the cost of the repair, I thought it was fair. I took the truck home and inspected the front end, it looked like they put new u-joints on the doubled cardan by the t-case, but the cv joint boot at the diff did not look new at all. Should I worry about it? Should I get a cv to u-joint coversion done to the front drive shaft? Is this possible? The truck is pretty much stock except for the red spacers between the springs(cheap lift???)I've been giving the truck some hell and seems to take it pretty good. Any suggestions?

you guys knew it was gonna break didn't you?!

well, I took the truck to the desert and guess what? "clunk, clunk, clunk". As I suspected, front cv shaft joint at the diff side went!! How can I do a permanent fix on this thing, I'm getting tired of having to fix stuff on this truck(its actually my wife's truck), I don't have a lot of time to be repairing it all the time...I think I read somewhere that you can replace the cv type joint on the front shaft with a U-joint, can someone tell me how? Where can I get one of these?

XJ or TJ shafts will fit inside the ZJ axle and are U joint instead of cv

I have the late model XJ shafts they are pretty beefy..

Down fall is ... No ABS unless you find a donor XJ with ABS..

Good luck..

He is talking about a DRIVE shaft.

You can either go to a junkyard and get a U-joint shaft, or get one built. You will also need a U-Joint yoke for the D30 to replace the retarded "cup" yoke that's on there.

I find the $300 "rebuild" to be a little bogus. From what you describe, there's about $60 of parts. So $240 labor. Even at $70 hr, that's roughly 3.5 hrs!

Hey thanks for the reply dude...I have been doing some reading on changing over to a u-jointed drive shaft and it seems that there's a vibration problem; if I go ahead and do that, will I get vibrations out of the front u-jointed drive shaft? How much will I have to fork out to do the conversion, approximately? Is it doable by a home mechanic like me??

I'm not sure about the vibration problem. I don't have all time 4x4.

To switch to a U-joint shaft, any person with a bit of mechanical experience could do it. The tricky part will be getting the torque on the D30 yoke right. You kinda of have to have a "feel" for it.
Are you talking about preload? :crazy

I can't remember what I paid for my drivshaft, but if you dont have a big lift I am sure you can get one for about $200 from southbay driveline. They build these things for jeeps daily and even sell them on ebay now. Ask for Steve, he runs the place and knows what you need
