Newbie here to Jeeps, but old hand at cars and mods. Is rebuilding a TC doable by the novice? I have rebuilt everything from engines to turbos, so I am not afrais unless forwarned.

My Jeep is a 1997 immaculate ZJ I picked up at auction for a song.

I am not doing the rebuild immediately, as I am only bucking in very tight turns. I usually drive the car in 2 wheels unless there is snow or unless I am 4 wheeling on the beach. I can forgo 4 wheeling for a while untli I get this sorted out. Seems like a good idea as this is alsso my daily driver.

Yes, they have rebuild kits for all t-cases. One of the best places to get one would be www.lightruck.com they should have all of the parts necessary.

What is the problem with your 242? You talk about bucking...do you mean when it is engaged? Because I thought the 242 was the hybrid part-time/full-time case. It could be put into full time mode for street or hi-lock and low lock for straight out fourwheelin'. Otherwise, it should be in 2wd mode all the time.

As to rebuilding it, I don't know how much more complicated the 242 is with the differential setup, but I doubt it is complicated. NP t-cases like the 231/241 are some of the best things for a novice to start with. But since you have apparently been a gear head for awhile, you should have no problem!

Also, if you need some specific information...I think I have an old shop manual for working on the NP242 that came in the XJs back in the '80s. I imagine some of the stuff would be similar.

good luck!

Yes, I will send you an email. If you pay for copies and shipping, I can send you some. It is about 35 pages. It is copyrighted in 1986, but since I am not selling it for a profit, only to help a friend out, then I don't see anything wrong with it.

Does that show how to rebuild it or just the parts pictures?

I emailed you about the manual, just waiting for a response.
