Is it possible to put an amp on the 98 GC stock head. i havent seen ne RCA plugs and dont see anything to substitute for it. is it possible or is a new head needed?
can i put an amp off the existing amp either?

you would need what is called a line output converter...

this is a device that takes the signal from speaker wires and converts it into the kind of signal you would get from RCAs...basically you put speaker wires in one side and RCAs come out the other side...

Some of today's amplifiers have this function built in...

You should not need to change the head unit and any reputable stereo shop should be able to take care fo somethign like this for you...

it would probably be worth your time to get a new HU as well. you can get a decent one with aux in for ipod/mp3/sat radio and RCAs for a amp for $150 or so

I’m working on replacing my not working infinity amp on my 96 GC. One of the options that were recommended was to purchase an amplifier that had speaker-level inputs rather than purchasing a separate line out converter. The difficult part is mapping the pinouts going into the amplifier to match the new one. Does anyone have the pin out diagram of the input going into the stock amplifier? I’ll check the Alldata or Mitchell site but I’m hoping someone on this forum can add their advise on this.

I would like to use the stock HU and keep the steering wheel controls and keep costs down.

first...Mitchell would be the place to go for the wiring diagram...that's what I use when I run into issues at work while installing...unfortunately I do not have access to Mitchell myself, but use a friends when the need arises...so I can't get you the information needed, but know you will find it there...

Now for the issue of replacing the amp...the only concerns I would see with replacing a factory amplifier would be as follows...

1. An aftermarket amp would want to see 2 - 8 ohms (in most cases, some may not be able to go down to 2 ohms)...you may end up having to replace speakers...

2. Depending on the output of the factory headunit, you may not get enough signal to the amplifier to get the proper signal out to the speakers...

3. you would still have to run the main power and ground for the amp as it would not be recommended to run it of of the factory power wiring...

4. Placement of the amplifier...may not work in terms of sizing and or air movement...you may have to find a new place to mount the amplifier and extend any wires...

Why do you really want to keep the factory head unit? You mentioned you wanted to keep costs down and that you wanted to maintain the steering wheel controls...is that the only reasons...

Personally I would replace the headunit and not worry about replacing the amplifier...instead I would just figure out the pin outs of the amplifier and rewire the harness so that the wires coming from the head unit to the amplifier were connected directly to the wires that run from the amplifier to the speakers...this would totally eliminate the need for an amplifier...

Decent decks can be found for under $150 and some come with wireless remotes that could take the place of your steering wheel controls...and pricing versus amplifiers...for somethign decent...you would be ahead of the game going with the deck...

The only concern I would have with a setup such as the one I described would be going back to the speaker resistance...aftermarket decks want between 4 and 8 ohms...go much outside of this and you are asking for trouble...

Just my 2 cents, but the wiring diagrams you would need can be found through Mitchell...

I used to run a 5 channel amp that had speaker level imputs with my stock headunit. It worked and sounded great. There is a link for the wiring diagram of the infinity amp on jeepsunlimited. I say go for it, you wont regret it if you want to save some money.

The amp I was looking at had speaker-level and preamp inputs. This way I can get my system up and running without too much of an initial investment but I have the option of a new HU when time and money is permitting. I plan to replace the worn out stock speakers (and wires) so I have the issue with going 2ohms.

help me too~

i bought a line output converter and i dont know which wires to hook up to which , it comes with 2 white, 2 gray, and 2 brown. i know the white and grey go to the speaker wires but what color ar the speaker wires that are hooked into the stock infinity amp? and what do the other brown wires go to ? thanks
