Well, I lost all foward gears and reverse works but there is a grinding noise and it slips. SOooo, I guess I need to get ready to swap out the trans. I have the 5.2 liter and I believe the AW4 with the 242??? it has AWD and 4 low, I would like to get away from the AWD, So what trans/tcase would swap in with the least amount of PITA??? I was wondering the years and vehicle makes to be looking for at the yard or with my local clubs...

Thanks in advance Chris

You have a 46RH Transmission and a 249 transfer case.... That is unless you've swapped in something else.

Drop the tranny pan and snap a picture for us and we'll tell you what's up. I just finished replacing the Torque Converter in mine and I've got the same transmission.

Will do first thing tommorow......I just redid the fluid about 400 miles ago....and there was some metal in it abot half a dimes worth. Ran fine, shifted fine. Drove from St Louis to KC, about 180 miles, parked it came out an hour later and nothing?????? Then this morning had reverse and drive with serious slippage???? Any ideas? just to keep me scrathing my head till I drain it tommorow...

Chris

well it sounds like either your Torque converter or the VC in your transfer case.... But the VC would lock-up and wouldn't cause the slippage you're describing, it'd cause wheel hop during tight turns... Either way.... A picture is worth a thousand words. Just make sure you try and get a good photos, Leave enough fluid in the pan so we can get a good shot of what exactly is in there. Good luck.

Ok being that you say it has no forward gears but it has reverse i'm going to go down the possible causes that Shopkey has listed in order of most likely to least likely or least severe to most severe.

1. Low fluid level.

2. Gearshift linkage is loose or misadjusted somehow.

3. Rear clutch assembly is burnt up and needs to be replaced.

4. Valve body malfunction.

5. Transmission overrunning clutch is broken and needs to be replaced.

6. Input shaft seal rings are worn.

7. Somehow the front planetary gearset has failed (broke).

Personally i think its number 2, but i'm an optimistic type of guy. Good luck.

Pulled the trans pan and drained it theis morning...found real dark trans fluid with hundreds of tiny metal flakes in it. I'm working on the pictures.
I'm guessing the clutches burnt up? The fluid was almost sludge like. Not sure if that is from the cold or is that what the fluid does when it degrades?
I'll try and post pics here shortly.....

Chris

Alright big picture seems you drove to a store with transmission in working order, came out and transmission was working in reverse with slippage and grinding noise with no forward gears. Obviously metal is from the grinding sound and burnt fluid is from that clutch not being fully engaged. Look at the shift mechanism to make sure it hasn't come loose to cause your problems first. Always assume the easiest solutions before jumping to major hassles.

Camera battery is dead....so that will wait till tommorow.

Big question??? What transmission will work with the 5.2? Can I go nwer without having to change up all the linkage? Will transmissions from a cherokee work? Any info would be a great help...

I have a 94 that had the 5.2, mine has the 46RH trans, the person i bought it from let the trans fluid run low or out hence overheating the fluid and pump resulting in pump failure and siezure. got qouted 1200 to rebuild, actually cost 1500 but only paid quote, any way the clutches were burned, the pump got so hot it welded itself to the tc. And as far as I know if you have the 5.2 then a trans from an XJ wont work, but if you had the 4.0 then I would say yes it would work
