i got a 242 out of a 96 ZJ. The rear output shaft is bent and it has a different tale housing. the junkyard has a 30 day return policy so i figured id grab it and ask questions later. i dont know if the zj was a 4.0l or a 5.2l. what im wondering is, will i be able to switch the rear output shaft from my 249 into the 242.

the left one is the 242 and the right is the 249

The output shaft is different from 249 to 242.

did you know it was bent when you bought it? I would return it and find another one thats really your best bet.

If the tailshaft is bent there really isn't anything you can do i wouldn't think. Take it back and get another case. I put a 242 in my last GC and went down the road with a terrible vibration. Pulled the case out and found that the shaft was curved off to one side. So i had to scrap the whole swap and find another case.
