I apologize for not being able to find this exact problem with search, but I have had little luck finding anything about the problem I'm having.

I have a 95 ZJ with 4.0 and select trac. I was driving on a wet road and figured I would put the thing into part time 4wd. I have done this a few times with no problems (have owned this Jeep for a few months, my first ever 4wd vehicle of any sort.)

Now the thing won't go back into 2wd at all, will go into all other ranges no problem. It bucks and makes noise (grinding and whining noises) while in 4wd.

Tried changing ranges going forward and reverse at low and high speed, as well as stopped.

Any ideas or links?

Sounds like your linkage may be loose. Quick fix: Get underneath with a 10mm open end wrench and manually turn the shifter on the case (that the wide, flat metal bar is attached to,) all the way forward for 2WD. Then adjust your linkage and tighten it up once adjusted.

Thanks I'll try that. The thing is a mess in so may ways, but I enjoy a fixer upper from time to time. At least the body is in great shape and the engine is still strong.

You might also try rolling ahead around 3 to 4 mph putting the truck into nuetral and moving the transfer shifter forward while rolling. I have a 4.0 cherokee that happened with. Oh Ive also found from time to time that moving the 4x4 shifter left or right while trying to disengage has also worked for me.

Well, problem solved. I just jacked the thing up, sprayed the hell out of the linkage with WD-40 and knocked it back into gear. I don't think the thing was ever used in 4wd really, everything looked pretty rusty down there.

Thanks for the help guys, it's good to have a place to go to learn about my new car.
