check engine light started coming on and battery died... checked codes and got a code 41 which is alternator field open or shorted.... took alternator off to get a new one and had it checked while i was at advance and it was charging 15 volts... no problem with the alt.. they said that the regulator was in the computer and that i should replace the computer... i think that this is bull and since i have never seen an ecm go bad I'm having trouble eating this... has anyone else had this code and is there a common fix? maybe just the connector breaking on the back of the alt?? is there a way to check this circuit??? anyone with a factory service manual???
anyway thanks in advance for the help..

Got this code last year. Paid $10 for a used alternator from someone parting out a Cherokee. I put it in and I'm still running on it.

With the vehicle idling and the needle in the discharge range I could give the alternator a few raps with a metal bar and my needle would jump to charging.

the voltage regulator is located in most chrysler vehicles in the pcm if your alternator was test for an output test it should put out 10 amps within spec, if it passed this test the perform a voltage regulator test to c if regulator is within spec, if it failed this test then VR is faulty computer would need replacing it is rare but very possible....these are your specs off alldata-Alternator ID. Output Amps @ 15 Volts, 1250 RPM

Footnotes:

wire continuity really isnt an issue here but if all terminal on the alt are hooked up and battery is good very important..
your check engine code means the alternator wasnt producing or wasnt in specs -- could be either problem i would trust a dealers diagnosis

u can buy a pcm for around 260-280$ recalibrated online
