I have a 95 5.2 Liter with the 249 Transfer case. The leak seems to be where the transmission meets the transfer case. The leaking liquid is red so I know it's transmission fluid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan

If you have a service manual there is detailed instuctions on how to fix seal leaks. Usually the hard part is finding out where its comming from.... your already half way there.

Good Luck

I've pulled my t-case twice and replaced the input seal once and the rear tranny output seal twice and the @#!!$ thing still leaks!! I give up. It's not too hard to do but I'm getting a little frustrated why it still leaks when everything seems to assemble correctly. Sorry, just had to vent.

orvis, maybe there is excessive runout (bad tranny output shaft bearing) causing the seal to leak, or the tranny is overfilled. is there a groove in the seal mating surface? sounds kinda fishy.....seals can't all be defective.

I just checked the tranny fluid level and it seems to be about 3/4" past the full mark. Is it really possible for it to leak because of this? I seem to recall a small gouge on the trannys' surface where the seal mates to it (from pulling the old seal with a seal puller I think), it's not real deep kinda like a pencil mark from inner to outer so I didn't put any silicone sealant on it. How could I check my output bearing? I really appreciate your help because I would like to put this to rest. Thanks.

wiggle the tranny output shaft. i gouged my seal bore as well, so i put some hi-temp rtv around the ouside diameter of the seal. does the tranny output shaft have a groove in it from the old seal? if so, when driving the new seal in, dont drive it in all the way so that the seal is touching the output shaft in a new spot. then use rtv to make sure it stays in place. also use emery cloth to smooth any rust spots or burrs on the tranny output shaft. HTH.

p.s. when checking the tranny fluid level you need to be in neutral and running at operating temp.
sorry about the -:thread hijack:-

Not to drag this thread up from the dead, but I'm about to do this also. Do I need any special tools? RTV I have. Any special tools?

same for 4.0 I-6???

Can I assume this would be the same problem if I have a 4.0L I-6? I have a small leak (red fluid) and I had a new tranny put in about 5 months ago. I'll check fluid level tonight.
How much would you expect to pay to have a shop replace BOTH seals??? (parts AND labor)
Thanx!!!
