Steering box compatibility

Can I put a '96 ZJ steering box on my '97 ZJ ? Are there different models or is it only one for all ? What do I have to look for ?
Can I put a XJ steering box on my ZJ ?

I have a XJ box on my ZJ as we speak.

I'm running a mid 80's MJ box myself.

Most of these Saginaw boxes are pretty standard stuff. If you're concerned about fitment before you bolt up the three bolts, check diameter and spline count of input and output shafts and overall box design. The two or three major designs are visually very different from each other. The only minor difference in the Jeep boxes is whether or not there are two or three mounting tabs, but either one will work for the ZJ.

Would you consider the J20 an upgrade over stock? I havent researched it much but seems people prefer it to replacing with OEM. Thanks David or anyone else.

AFAIK, the J20 box has a larger piston than the ZJ box - just makes it a little stronger.

A "real" J20 box will have a larger piston and 4 tabs IIRC, just be careful of the re-mans alot of them have the 4 mounting tabs but still use the same size piston as the factory box. Dodge Durangos have the larger piston. From what I understad the AGR are jsut modded factory pumps and basically a J20 box.
