It's time to replace the tires on my 95 ZJ Orvis. Right now I have 30"x9.50 tires on the ZJ. I'd like to go to 31x10.50. Can I do so without problems? I have replaced the UpCountry coils with OME coils; they provide about 1.25" of lift over stock (per OME's specs). I'm willing to accept a little tire rub on the sway bar at full turn. Will I have rubbing in other places? If so, would adding the Teraflex BB fix the problem?

I'm asking because I have found much conflicting info on the required lift for 31" tires on the ZJ--different sources I've found on the web range from 1.5" to 3" of lift needed.

The rest of the suspension setup shouldn't have any problem with 31" tires: Rancho 9000 shocks, ProComp adjustable track bar, JKS QDs, and Teraflex adjustable lower front control arms. (Rear lower control arms are stock size, though custom-armored.) I think there would not be any clearance problems with the ARB Bull Bar front bumper.

Comments?

Are the OME's rated over UC? If so, then you can fit the 31's no problem (that'd be close to 3" of lift). I don't think they are, so I'm guessing you'd have some rubbing issues. I'm running Tera's BB and 31" KM's, and have rubbing at full lock on the LCA's, extremely slight rubbing on the driver's side of the swaybar when flexing while making tight turns (not disco'd), and an occasional rub on the rear of the front bumper (that little black piece that sticks out below the inner fender liner). I'm not running stock rims, so your turning issues may be a little different.

31" BFG AT's fit fine, only rubbing LCA at full lock w/ about 2.5" of lift and stock rims. (Ran that setup on my last ZJ... Rancho 3" that had lots of miles on it... ;) )

okay, i run RE 3.5 lift, ARB bumper up front, 31x10.5 bfg mt's and a partidge in a pear tree. only rubbing I had was rear passenger side at FULL stuff.....i don't have the x-tended bump stops. front was pretty much taken care of because the front axle moves forward in the control arm arc..ARB bumper clears out the space in front of the axle. so, in essence, you will be okay....just hammer down the pinch weld in the wheel well so as not to unintentionally sipe your tires... cheers!

I originally had Up Country springs; replaced several months ago when one of them just collapsed (at 105K miles). UC only provides about 3/4 inch of lift over stock...not "close to 3"). The OME springs provide 1.25" of lift, according to the OME spec sheet. My sense is that I would need more...possibly by adding the Teraflex BB spacers.

My goal here is to use as little lift as possible and still make the 31" tires feasible. This car is also my daily commuter, and if I lift too much, I have a clearance problem in the garage where I work.

I ran 31x10.50 michelin ltx m/s on my 96 v8 ZJ with UC with very minor rubbing on turns. I never got the chance to wheel it so dont know how well they would stuff. I would recommend the OME 1.5's or a 2"BB and you should have no worries. If you are running wheels with a different backspacing than stock then you might have a problem and need to go higher to run the same size tires and be able to stuff them without destroying the body panels. HTH

you might have to trim the front bumper slighty, but i think the rear will be ok.
