I have read a lot about the plaguing problems with the WJ's brakes. I'm wondering if someone can help me troubleshoot mine!? While braking, I get a strong shuddering through the steering wheel. But, only through 50mph to 40mph. What confuses me is the fact that this only happens throught this short mph range. :dunno: Anyway, I can only assume that my rotors are warped. By the way, this problem was occuring berfore all my mods. I also thought an alignment would remedy this, but it didn't. Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

wj brakes

i have the same problem started be fore mods. I changed rotors and that helped a lot but still have your symptoms. i had an alignment but they said something is still off, and they couldn't make an adjustment to correct it. I took it to the dealer and they said I needed new ball joints and bearings. the place that did my alignment said there was nothing wrong with balljoints and bearings, so i am totally lost and don't know who to believe. I also have tire wear on the inside edge of both tires.

I was hoping I would get a much more optimistic reply. Not that I doubt your experiences at all wjfritz. I just haven't had the opportunity to troubleshoot mine as deeply as you, and was hoping for better news.
Tomorrow I will approach my dealership, and see if I can possibly find out something different. If in fact, I am told something else (good or bad), I'll be sure to pass it on to you.
By the way, I haven't experienced the tire wear that you mentioned. But, one strange thing I did notice was after driving around in a hard rain for a while, the shuddering symptoms seemed to subside temporarily :dunno: ! Call me crazy....anyway, I'll get back to you!

STILLEN's are your answer (well, as far as the actual brake problem is concerned)... a little expensive but well worth it in terms of shorter stopping distance and fewer headaches.

Good luck diagnosing your probs.

Thanks for all the replies guys! :D
Just got back from the dealership, and the brakes are once again as I remember them! They replaced the front rotors, and calipers according to the TSB. WOW what a difference. I have never experienced DW, but hard braking from 50 to 40 was rough! I did have to pay $100 deductible according to my coverage plan. But that is way cheaper than if I bought the stuff outright and did it myself.
I have considered the Stillens, but have read conflicting reports on this forum. Some say that they are great, others say they aren't worth the $$$. Anyway, just thought I'd inform you guys. Good luck with your problems wjfritz!

Glad to hear you fixed your brakes... and at $100 that was probably your best option. And if they'll last it certainly beats the $300 for the stillens.

As for how i feel about stillens,

I bought my jeep with 21K and by the time i reached 28K, the front rotors needed turning. They needed it again withing the next 10 - at which time i decided :dunno: what am i doing!? Went with the stillens and haven't had any probs for the past 20K  Can't argue much with that!

Hope you have just as good luck with your new ones!

Thanks Silverback, I agree. I think $100 is my best option at this time! I will definately keep the Stillen option in the back of my mind though.
From reading posts in the past, and going over the TSB, I believe the real problem was in the calipers and not so much in the rotors. Causing even the Stillens to warp in certain cases. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. So, now that I do have the "upgraded" calipers, Stillens could definately be an option in the WJ's future!
Thanks again!
