I know there is a thread like this on pirate but all that anyone talks about is what they did to their XJ. I want to know what people are doing to their ZJ's with stock axles. I am running a D30 in the front and a D35 in the rear , and am planning on moving to 33's soon and I would like to be able to stop. So if people could chime in and let me know what they are doing that would be great.

I am open to spending money, ask my wife. I am just wondering if anybody is using calipers, master cylinders or just what off of other vehicles.

Significant brake upgrade using a master cylinder from a Ford Van and also (as seen on Trucks) converting to WJ knuckles with better calipers and even a better steering setup going that way.

Have Stillen cross drilled rotors at all 4 corners on my ZJ and with the pads they recmmended also and I really noticed a difference.

You can also check with Van from Vanco Pwer Brake Systems http://www.vancopbs.com/

Van has some upgraded rotor kits that are pretty cool and he is a GREAT guy to work with. He has helped me out with the Zach Yost fundraisers in the past.

Let him know I sent you.

My first 4x4 had 4 wheel drums and could not lock up 36" monster mudders on the dirt so I think ZJ brakes are pretty sweet. If you want better, I think you will get the most bang for the buck with the best high-friction brake pads you can find. As always, when replacing pads you want to at least turn the rotors or, ideally, replace the rotors as well.

Thought that I would post an update here. After I installed my lift and tires I really decided that brakes needed some fixing. So I started off with adding some braided lines on the front and to the rear also. That along with a good brake flush and bleed, the brakes are great. I think that until my wj knuckle upgrade that the brakes will be fine.

I ended up replacing the rubber brake lines with stainless lines and it made a world of difference. I then did the wj swap when I added my HP30 and it helped a little. But by far the best thing that I did was the stainless lines.

I'm in the process of installing the vanco big brake upgrade on my 5.9, as stopping with my 35s is mostly an exercise in wishful thinking with the stock brakes. Info on the kit here: http://www.vancopbs.com/category_s/121.htm. Van has a 16" kit available too, which is what I opted for, but it's not listed on the site.

Will post the results once everything is done and properly broken in if anyone is interested.

i have wj knuckles on my xj and they are worth the work. i didnt put a wj booster or master cylinder on yet, but its in the future when either one pukes. wj knuckle conversion requires welding so if you dont know how take it to someone who does. you can use all your steering components also. one draw back is you must use 16 inch rims, unless you grind the crap out of the caliper. but i would suggest 16 inch rims. i used the wj wheel hub, and used a 1.25" adapter with a set of liberty rims. i run a 285/75/16 and have no issues stopping.
