This thread is to help compile information for those who want to swap out Transfer Cases (TC) on there and ZJ's and WJ's...There are many people that want to know what year and case that they can "direct" bolt up to.. I am no means the most knowledgable on this subject with ZJ's TC..So if someone wants to add ZJ info or continue this thread by all means please do so.

Solitude has a great write up on swapping 249<242 for ZJ's

Geesaw posted this great site for finding spline counts, output styles, and exposed lengths of input shafts.

WJ TC swap
This swap is for a V8 WJ's ONLY!! The WJ's with the 4.7 used the 45RFE and 545RFE tranny.

TRANSER CASE: 247 to 242WJ/HD

242WJ and a 242HD will bolt right up to these tranny's..The 242HD can only be found in 2002-2003 WJ with a V8 and can run around $800 bones for a used one at a junk yard...

242WJ that I found is out of a 2001 WJ with a V8...i have been told that it is also know as a 242LD and won't work and wont match up...well i was right it does match up...as far as strength people say that the 242HD is suppose to have stronger gears but as of yet i have no troubles with this TC...

The input shaft length of the 247 is 2.50" long so therefor your 242WJ/HD will need to be the 2.50" long.

SHIFTER AND CABLES:

To help see what range your in you need to replace the shift bezel..this is not a "must" but it can help out.
Mopar Part number: 52109671AB

On the side of the TC there is a small lever that cable connects to that controls what range your in...make sure you have this because the one from the 247 is to long to swap over.

On the side of the Tranny the TC shifter cable runs through a bracket to the TC...if your bracket has TWO holes you will need to move the cable to the lower bracket to properly align the cable for shifting...If your bracket only has one hole you will need to purchase the correct bracket with two holes or do what i did and "customize" the exsiting bracket.

DRIVE SHAFTS:

To run your WJ you will need the rear DS from the 242WJ/HD came from, the stock rearshaft from the 247 is to 2.50" to long.

If you have a 1999-2001 WJ, you might have a CV joint at the transfer case instead of a u-joint. In this case you will need to also find a donor shaft out of a 2002-2003 V8 Grand Cherokee. Some people have swapped out there old output to the new transfer case. You can purchase a new front shaft from Tom Woods or a local drive line shop.

Electrical:
On the 242's there is a connection that tells you if your in 4x4 Low Range, or High Range. On the 247 there are NO electrical connection on the case...i have heard or people connecting these wires on the 242 and using the function..but i am unaware of what wires to connect to..

I'm not really worried about shortening the rear shaft but what about the front shaft and what year 242's will work I dont see any elect. connector on my 247 i need details like years and models that will bolt up will the input shaft from my 247 fit into the 242 are the brackets and shifter availible at a dealer and do i order them for a 242. the swap i am doing is my daily driver so if i could compile all the info get all the parts before i begin a have minnimal down time

there are no electrical connection on the 247...read the info again its all there....

Thanks for the link from JU.

Does the small lever pretty much look the same as the 247's?
Pic?

Thanks!!

BTW: The Select Trac runs about $400-$500 in this area.

levers are diffrent on the sid eof the case...the 247 is longer cause of the simple design of the case and you only have 3 selection total...alot of ground to cover in the case...the 242 is shorter due to the fact it has 5 options to go through...its just more stuff in packed in to a small case so it has to be a bit more precise...the longer lever from the 247 wont let you shift into 2 high and 4 hi if you try to install it.

I picked up my 242 and driveshaft this morning. Total $518 (TC: $375, DS: $75, Transfer from Knoxville to Nashville: $25, and TAX $43)

Called it an early day of work, got home, and got it installed in 3 hours (and that is also including going to Autozone for longer 9/16 socket... which is longer than regular and shorter than a deep socket). One of the bottom nuts and the diagonal top nut were a PIA. Would definitely recommend swivel/universal extensions (lucky I already had them).

T Case already had the lever with it, and my bracket had 2 holes.

I can feel a difference while driving.... not a strain in making turns. I love the "shift on the fly"!!!!

i just did my WJ 242 swap today as well..and i agree those 2 bolts are the only reason it took me as long as it did..otherwise i think i could have shaved a good 30 min off the install

I have been searching everywhere with no answer to my question. Hopefully I can find an answer to my question here... I have the opportunity to get a 242wj case and shafts from a 00 GC with the 4.0 I6. It has the 42re trans in it. Im not sure if it will work in my 00 Limited since it has the 4.7 and the 545rfe trans. I can swap parts from case to case if necessary. I just want to know what Im getting into since this is my dd and downtime needs to be limited. Thanks in advance, Chris

Identifying a 242HD vs 242wj

I was wondering how to go about identifying a 242HD vs the 242wj/242ld? I have a 2004 with the 4.7HO and do not want the lower grade TC for my swap. I have one that was reported to be a 242HD, but how do I confirm this? Thanks!

the tag will say it and the tailshaft of the TC will have an aluminum housing NOT the rubber.

so will the 242 HD out of a WJ fit in a 1998 ZJ v-8 i found a 242HD from a wj just seeing if it would fit mine is the 242hd better then the older 242 the 242hd i found is 300$ it has 80,000 miles on it
That T-case will not work for the ZJ. The WJ doesn't have a speedo gear in the tailshaft, it uses the rear abs for speed sensing. So you wouldn't have anywhere to connect your speedo gear.

That being said, I don't know if you can switch the tail shaft and housing from your current unit to make it work.

Help with transfer case

Ok I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 V8, and the 247 TC. My TC is done for and I have decided to swap it for a 242 TC. Here is the deal: Everybody keeps saying that the 242 must come out of a 02-03 4.7 Grand Cherokee, but I found a 242 out of a 2000 4.7 Grand Cherokee. What is the difference? Also what "ALL" do I need to complete this swap? Please reply soon, thank you

the selector lever can be bought from an local dealer for around $23.... thats what i had to do just bring them a vin number from any grand cherokee that has a select track from the factory..... the vin i used i got from ebay just looked up jeeps and used the vin to get the part... also to make everyone aware... you can buy all the yokes from ebay or some website like that .... and then use the front shaft from a cherokee.... my front dana 30 yoke i took from my dads old tj dana 30.... my t-case yoke i bought from ebay for $20.... and the rear drive shaft yoke i bought from a guy on here.... just had to get a conversion ujoint from 1310 to 1330 ... sold at advance auto parts for $15... then had a local welding shop shorten and balance my d/s for $35..... all in all my swap was pretty cheap..... still havent hooked up the electrical connector on top of my tcase though.... wasnt sure what it was for.... now i know thanks to buttnakedjeepin... hope this helps
