Hey i have started to get really horrible gas mileage my computer on the over head console is saying average of 13.6 and is starting to drop also i think my exhaust manifold is leaking/cracked thinking this is the problem what header does anyone recommend i have looked at mopar but it is like 550 dollers i do not exactly want to spend that much what header does anyone recommend? also what inch piping would give me the best performance i have a 4.0L I6? thanx for any info

I've got a '98 Grand and while having rear end woes, the local dealer found the exhaust manifold was cracked. I think they said that there was a technical service bulletin on this. At any rate, I had an extended warranty so they fixed it under that...If not, they told me that the part cost about $800, which if true, is major rip....

Location?
Cold weather will reduce fuel milage.
A messed up thermostate will cause very bad fuel milage.
A cracked header should have no effect on fuel milage, untill the valves get in trouble from the cold air being drawn to them thru the crack.

im from kansas, i droped a k&n filter in and im getting better 14.2avg but it just seems to me that an I6 would get better gas mileage, i have almost 90,000 miles on it now and bought it with 84,000 im going to try tune up and maybe a new exhaust system, hopefully this will help, can anyone give me any idea on what a lot of people average with I6's if its around the same mpg im not going to worry about it i just thought maybe a problem ariseing and maybe trying to catch it early thanx for any info

Right now my 97 4.0 ZJ with 66k miles reads 14.4mpg on the overhead console. That's mostly around town, with some highway too.

I don't think the 4.0 takes too kindly to cold weather, I get about 2mpg avg. more in the warmer months.

Mike, that's EXACTLY what i've noticed over the last month on my 4.0 WJ. I normally get 18mpg on the overhead display (haven't checked it by hand yet, but plan to) but recently we've averaged temperatures of 30 or below for the last few weeks. Now my best average mpg is 16.3 !

Mileage

 I have a 96 I6 and i recently bonked my cat and it clogged up and wouldnt run...so i just pulled it off. now my puter reads about 8.2 MPG (ouch)...im looking into getting a new cat and a car sound cat is only 100 but it dosent have a place for an O2 sensor so the local shop said that i shouldnt do it! anyone know if it is my cat (or lack there of) that brought it down or what? cause Kolaik said that i should get that cat but i dunno what to do about the sensor...any ideas?

Is this not correct.
If your cat is gone your o-2 sensor is either missing or not reading correctly.
This would put your engine into eternal closed (rich warm up by defalt) loop.

Dang. I'm getting around 10.3 mpg. What can I do?

About that O2 sensor...could someone explain to me why i just cant drill into my exhaust really close after the cat? shouldnt that work? or even jsut very carefully find the right spot and put it in the cat itself...about that warm up cycle. what can i do about it if i had the car sound cat and the whole drilling and ploping the senor somewhere else dosent work? thanx

I have an aftermarket cat on my 97, it was a direct fit, the O2 bung is actually in the short length of pipe about 2" from the cat body. I had talked to a few people and no one thought it would be a problem.
Installed everything is fine. I get average 15.1MPG (according to overhead) and it is very cold here in Ontario this winter. (extended warm up's, winter gas)
So you should have no problem.
Good luck!
